Chopsticks

Do you use them when eating Asian cuisine?

I do and swear that it somehow magically makes the food taste better. DH doesn't use them and thinks I'm nuts.

Re: Chopsticks

  • I voted "I use them" but that's not entirely true.  I use them when eating sushi, and occasionally when eating regular Chinese food.  But if I am eating rice or something with smaller pieces of meat then I find them to be more hassle than they are worth.

There are certain foods that I just find easier to eat with chopsticks.  Noodles are definitely one of them.  In Japan, DH and I got used to eating salads with chopsticks too, and we completely forgot how to stab lettuce using forks.  Stab stab stab nothing.  We remember now, but it took a while.  Maybe chopsticks are easier with salad, too.  Man we once ate pizza with chopsticks in restaurant in Japan and didn't realise how ridiculous that was until we were walking home and discussing dinner.  We vowed never again to do that one.

Although I'm still mastering the art of using chop sticks, I will use it when I can. Its terrible, but I have an easier time using them to eat Pad thai, or lo mein, than sushi. But I've gotten better!

  • I use them but can not for the life of me use them for rice. It's horrible!
  • I've tried numerous times, and I understand why Asians tend to be more thin...I am terrible at it!

I can't believe you can't use them for rice!  I am a master....I only get one grain of rice at a time though......

Just kidding, I can only use them for large pieces of food.  Once I get down to the rice its fork time!

Well put.  Same with me.  I am chopstick challenged!

  • The summers when I was 7 and 8 we had Japanese Foreign Exchange Students stay with us - my family ate only with chopsticks for dinner while the girls stayed with us. This helped solidify my chopstick skills :)

DH only started using them in college (he's from a very meat-and-potatoes family), and loves to use them every chance he gets. He even has a very nice pair (well weighted/balanced) that he refuses to let me use. LOL.

  • I am totally chopstick challenged!  Though I do want to learn so that if I travel to Asian countries some day (which I hope to do) I don't look like a silly tourist (which I'm sure I will anyways).

  • I'm a total child when it comes to food, so the only "asian" food I eat is sweet and sour chicken, but without the sweet and sour sauce (so, chicken nuggets) and I eat those with my fingers or a fork. lol

I have ventured into the realm of fried rice, but I still don't like it, but I'll eat it if I have to... and I use a fork for that too.

  • I'm actually in the "any food that I can possible eat with chopsticks, I do" category. I love eating with chopsticks, especially salad. I started doing in in college and loved how it made my salads last longer, so I enjoyed them more. Haven't tried eating pizza with them though. :) My college roommate gave me a huge set of nice reusable wooden chopsticks and I love them.

  • Just with sushi. When I was little though I'd ask my mom to make Ramen and eat chopsticks to eat it :)
  • I do whenever I can. I travel to Japan for work occassionally and want to keep my skills up. In the US we do not usually have sticky rice so I need to use a fork for that.

On a flight to Japan the flight attendant had chopsticks for the noodle soup. A lady passenger asked for a spoon. i could not believe the flight attendant responded with a comment that she needed to get used to chopsticks since she was going to Japan. To which the lady responded - "I have a connecting flight to Guam."

    LOL!

I use them when eating at Asian restaurants.  I like that I take smaller slower bites that make me enjoy the food more and not eat too much/too fast.

funny stuff!  though.. how in the world was that lady intending on eating cup noodle with a spoon?!  A fork to grab the noodles, but a spoon?  Did she have both a fork and a spoon or something?  Insanity XD
