Sewing machine people - help!

I think something is wrong with my machine. Every time it stitches, it's really loose (mostly in the back of the fabric) and often the bobbin thread gets all effed up so I'm guessing it's a problem with the bobbin. The tension on the machine is where it should be. I can't figure out anything else to check:/

I'm about to go out and just buy a new one. Maybe this one has seen it's day. I probably bought it in 2004 and it was only like $125.

Thoughts?

TIA!

Re: Sewing machine people - help!

  • Hmm. May be an issue with the bobbin. You could probably get it fixed for a lot cheaper than buying a new one. Have you had it cleaned at all since you got it? Unfortunately the cheaper sewing machines have a lot of problems because the parts are made of plastic.

Hah! It's never been cleaned! That could explain a lot. I guess I just figured even if it could be fixed, it may not be worth it since it wasn't the best machine to begin with.

  • Why I am NOT the ideal wife -- I can't sew sh*t.  The only sewing machine I own is my mother's hand-me-down that she used while I was growing up.  I haven't touched it since she gave it to me, so chance are it doesn't work at all.  Show you what I know... I can't even thread a bobbin!

I'm going to guess you're having a tension issue too.

Service on your machine may or may not be worth it- call around and see if you can find a deal...  I spent a little bit more than you did on my machine, but I got an incredible deal and couldn't replace it for even double what it cost me to fix it, so I went ahead and had mine serviced, now it is good as new.

  • The tension on the bobbin may be messed up. I had this happen to me a couple of weeks ago and I just had to rewind it. It actually "could" be the tension on the  needle but most likely it's the bobbin.

Thanks Mary. What kind of place did you find to get yours serviced?

Maybe I'll try re winding it too. Thanks!

Lol don't even worry! My sewing skils are beyond limited....I make things up as I go along:)

  • I think it's a tension issue. I'm thinking it probably just needs to be oiled, but it could be something else.
  • Definitely sounds like a bobbin tension issue. First I'd say you need it cleaned (lots of lint can get caught in there and mess up the mechanics), but it might need oiling and whatnot, too. I had this issue recently and had it serviced and it came back fine- it was $90 for the servicing though, but for me my machine is worth the cost.

I went somewhere called Sun Sew Vac.  It's out near Ft Belvoir.  BUT there's definitely a vacuum repair shop in 7 Corners that does it, and you can probably find somewhere similar closer to you.

  • Thanks all! I think I'll look into the cost having it serviced and see if it will be worth it!
