So DH and I took C with us for the 8 am traditional service in the Chapel yesterday. He was ok for the first 15-20 minutes then he started getting rowdy. DH took him into the crying room but apparently there was a large family with 10 year old+ children in there coloring quietly, a couple with a 3 week old baby who was sleeping, and then 2 teenagers drinking coffee and eating doughnuts so he didn't have a place to sit down with C (interesting because I thought a crying room was meant for noisy children, not perfectly well behaved children and teenagers
). He was just going to stand in the back but since C was pointing out the different colors on the wall, the other people in the cry room started giving DH the stink eye, so they went out to the hallway and eventually the car when C went into a full blown meltdown.
We both loved the service, the little that DH got to hear; and are seriously considering making Hope our new church home. Do any of you have experience using the nursery provided for children under 3? Is it open for use during the 8 am traditional Sunday service? If so, where is it located? Do I just drop my kid off, do I have to sign up or anything? We normally wouldn't do this and would keep C with us but he's just at a bad age where sitting still for an hour + while being perfectly quiet just doesn't seem to be happening. Thanks for the help!
Re: Lutheran Church of Hope Question
No experience with Hope, but we had a similar issue last time we went to my IL's church. The cry room was filled with an entire adult family, so we couldn't use it. Fortunately, my 3yo niece had to go potty, which can take a while at that age, so Nicholas and I volunteered to take her so I could get him somewhere where no one could hear him. MIL works at the church and apparently no one will say anything to this family. I think it's just disrespectful.
I have heard great things about the childcare at Hope, I hope that works out for you.
This is exactly what I was thinking but since we were visiting we didn't want to ruffle any feathers. I think maybe next time we'll go a little early and start in the cry room, if that doesn't work. We'll give the nursery a try. Thanks for the information. Do you know where the nursery is located in relation to the chapel? Hope is pretty big, I don't want to get lost. :-)
Hey Syd!
The main nursery is located kind of near the center of the church. If you walk down the hallway past the chapel (going towards the center of the church, not the parking lot), you'll reach the end of the hallway and then look off to your right. The nursery is that big room w/ all the windows.
I don't think I'd have a problem at all w/ the nursery during the 8:00 service b/c there are so many fewer families w/ young kids at that service that it shouldn't be too busy. We weren't comfortable w/ taking our kids there during the 9:15 or 11 b/c it is PACKED. Mind you that as a SAHM, I am really up tight about those types of things and my kids do really poorly in big group situations. the couple of times we tried it, we got paged b/c G woudln't stop freaking out.
Another awesome option, that I am pretty sure exists durign the 8:00 service is something called "Jubilation Station." It is like pre-sunday school for kids. I can't remember if you have to be 2 or 2 1/2 to go there, but eitehr way, C is pretty close to being able to go (and they don't like ask for a birth certificate, so I'm sure you could take him now). Gretta goes there every week. It is much less crowded, they have an organized craft, they get a snack, etc. Just like the nursery, they'll give you a pager if you are needed, but unlike the nursery, I've never been paged back to JS to pick up a screaming child.
JS is kind of hard to describe in terms of how to get there - it is on the main level, down a hallway which is to the left of the main nursery. If I were you, I'd ask at the big info station in the middle of the church and they'll surely be able to guide you in the right direction.
Glad you like Hope! We really love it there, very big, but very exciting and awesome speakers all the time.
Hi Jaime!
Thanks for the directions, I feel better having an idea of where to go for more information and for the nursery. I agree, the 8 am service will probably have way fewer children so it might be an option for us. If there are so many fewer children at JS, maybe they won't offer that during the 8 am service because of lack of numbers? I'll double check next week when we go and see if it is an option. I would much rather have him in a pre-sunday school option than in a nursery if that's an option. Not so worried about the number of kids or C's reaction, but always nice to have some extra Jesus reinforcement! :-)
