Where do I look for a job?

I've been looking for a new job for several months.  I have applied for several positions online but I'm stuck as to what I want to do.

I'm 24, a recent graduate with a BS in Business, and an extensive background in customer service.  I was in retail (associate in different clothing stores) for 5 years, a server for 3 years, and then a department manager (pet store) for 1 year.  I also have a 1 year old daughter so I have to explain the gap in dates as maternity leave.

I want to be able to make decisions.  Some examples: We are in the middle of a large reset.  In the past 3 weeks we have gotten 8 different shipments from Fed Ex Freight and each pallet has 2-3 shelves on it.  Why not plan thoroughly and send all 24 shelves at one time? I'm all for paying Fed Ex, but when the same guy (theoretically) is delivering the same pallets weekly to 6 area stores, come on!

Our delivery truck comes on Wednesdays.  Last week we got an e-mail after our delivery stating that they had left one pallet off the truck and would deliver it by the following Monday at 5pm.  Why not just wait until Wednesday since you are already coming?

Corporate has no idea how long it takes to do anything.  They allot us x amount of hours and in reality it takes x times 2 to get the job done correctly (all area stores have the same problem, its not just my team sucks) so we are taking away from payroll hours and helping customers on the floor (and, you know, making money for the company)

These are just a few reasons why I don't like my job.  Some things I do like: I am organized.  I love paper work and numbers.  I like the details and I totally geek out when it comes to new projects. I'm good at customer service, but I don't always like it.  The general public can be draining.

So I need some ideas, ladies.  Where do I look for a job.  Give me some examples of jobs other than retail.

Re: Where do I look for a job?

  • Ever considered public accounting? You say you like paper work, numbers and organization...Depending on where you work, you'd have to deal with clients - but it isn't the same as dealing with the general public.

Tax returns, especially business returns, are often like mini-projects. Audits would be the BIG projects, and there's all sorts of stuff in-between. It is rewarding & challenging, and you get to deal with people in small doses. If not public accounting, maybe a bookkeeping or staff accountant job with a corporation would interest you. I swear accounting isn't boring like most people think & with your background in business you may like it. :)

  • What about working on the corporate side of retail? It sounds like you have some great ideas and might make more of an impact behind the scenes.
