rec your bank (checking)

we have had checking/savings with bank of america for the past 8 years (previously with suntrust) and BOA has had our mortgage since 09.

lately, i've been underwhelmed by their customer service and a few incidents in particular have made us consider a switch. i'm also frustrated by the lack of effective budgeting and planning tools BOA offers online.

if you love your bank, please share features/highlights. i'm particularly interested in PNC's virtual wallet, but have heard some things about their customer service that give me pause as well.

Re: rec your bank (checking)

  • I have been with Wachovia since college and would recommend their service...I've lost my card once and my purse was stolen last year - both times I had fraudulent charges and it was extremely easy and painless (given the circumstances!) to report it and get fraud coverage for the $$ spent by someone else.

  • We use a credit union associated w/ work.  Great customer service, low fees, great mortgage/loan rates.

  • we use ING.  The only "blah" part is that you don't get physical checks...you can have them mail checks to whomever you want.  Usually this isn't a big deal for us, but it was kind of a PITA when I needed to reimburse a friend in CA for some stuff she sent me.

otherwise, ING is all awesome, all the time.

  • I LOVE Wachovia, but we actually just switched banks away from Wachovia.  Since they were bought out, the branches in this area will be switching to another bank (I can't remember which one right now) that does not offer free checking.  I have also read that the swich will be determined by where you opened your account.  Both my husband and I opened Wachovia accounts in two different states (neither of which was Virginia).  The dates for these states are months before the switch is going to happen here.  I just forsee this being a big cluster of a mess so we switched to Burke and Herbert (I had never heard of them but they seem to be pretty local).

Basically, if you go with Wachovia, make sure you know how your account will be handled with the switch.

  • we us northwest federal credit union and capital one. Both are good, I do get better service with northwest and everything is done locally for them. But I would rec. cap one as well. Northwest doesn't have any

We use USAA, and they're great.  The interest rate on the checking/savings is only so-so, but the customer service is awesome.

Do NOT go with Ally.  They're a hot mess.  We had a horrible experience with them.

  • TDBank - they are open 7 days a week.  ( never knew how convenient or nice was until we had it )

for investment banking, we go USAA all the way

  • I was with Wachovia for years until they started messing up big time lately, starting with the 1000 dollar cash deposit that went through (according to the computer) then suddenly disappeared the next day. They said they had no record of it having been made. Thank GOD I found my deposit receipt later because they told me we were out of luck before I did. WTH?!?! Anyways, we closed that account after more instances and are with Capital One now.

  • Wachovia has nice customer service but I don't think their online has really any exceptional tools (and sometimes transactions take 24-48 hours to post). If you can become a member of USAA it is fabulous but you need a parent or close relative to be former or active military.

My mom has PNC and she has been really happy with them.

  • Can anyone tell me more about USAA?  Do they have any actual physical bank locations to deposit money, or is it all done online like ING?  MIL is moving down here and we are trying to find a bank besides Wachovia for her.  She is currently with Citizens, but there are no locations down here.
  • I am with PNC and I love them (I have a joint checking, personal checking, and money market account).  I haven't used the Virtual Wallet (I use Mint.com for budgeting and planning) so I can't help much on that.  But I can speak for the customer service.  They are awesome.  Whenever I go in there, there is never a line, and they are always friendly.  They don't charge fees for really anything.

The only downside that we've seen is that my husband doesn't like the online banking as much as Wachovia, but I don't have an issue with it.  Also, it does take a little while if I use my card for the transaction to show up in his feed, even though it's in mine.  Overall, I have to say I've been happy with them for the last 4 years.

(I left BB&T to go to PNC, and I would recommend to stay away from them.)

USAA doesn't have any physical locations (except in Texas, I think), but you can deposit checks at a second connected bank, using an iPhone app, or at a UPS location.
