taking copy of resume to interview?

Do you take a copy of your resume to interviews for the manager? I've always been told to do this but the last few I've gone on the person already had a copy in front of them so I'm thinking it might be unnecessary. I'm in HR so I feel like I should know the answer, but I don't do much recruiting/interviewing.

Re: taking copy of resume to interview?

  • I don't, unless asked otherwise. I usually have to verbally explain my experience anyways.
  • I always do.  It is much better to have it and not need it then to have them ask for one and not have it. Worst case, it makes you look prepared and it is unnecessary which is much better than looking unprepared.
  • I always bring an extra copy. No one may need it, but I had an interview where the guy didn't have a copy and I was able to just pull it out for him.

I don't see why it would be bad to have a copy on hand.

  • I always take an extra copy with me.
  • My view is from the other side of the table.  As the person conducting the interview it is great when someone brings their resume.  It shows they took the extra step to bring it with them and thought this out.  Also I am usually running in 5 different directions at the time of the interview and forget to grab the persons resume from my email.

Always bring at least one copy, if not multiple.  As well as a portfolio of your work if you are applying to a job in a field of this nature (graphic design, marketing, web design, etc.)

  • I bring a couple extra copies.  I've been in interviews where the hiring manager asked someone else to sit in, and I was able to provide them with a copy.  I keep them in the pocket part of my padfolio, so nobody sees them unless I pull them out (thus, there's no downside to having them IMO).

  • Yes. I always bring a copy on resume paper. At my last interview, he asked if I had brought a copy and he actually had one in front of him. I also bring a copy of my references to provide if asked.
  • I look like the black sheep now. Embarrassed
  • Yep, always - I bring several. I've often ended up in interviews in front of a group of people where they haven't all had a chance to look at my resume, so having it there on demand has been helpful.
  • Totally this! I ALWAYS bring at least 2 copies of my resume, just in case. You can always hide it in a portfolio or briefcase pocket so it's easily accessible and you don't have to dig if the interviewer(s) asks for it.
