How did you learn to use them? DH has tried to teach me, but I am so uncoordinated that I just can't do it. I've heard there are trainer sets (that they use with children), and was wondering if these would help, as I'd really like to learn (but in the comfort of my own home so I don't feel silly).

Re: s/o chopsticks
So DH tried teaching me 5 or 6 times and I still had a hard time picking up on it. One night we went out to Teapot, the local chinese food place, and one of the girls working there noticed me struggling (like a silly white girl) and came over and gave me a nice tutorial.
After that I just FORCE myself to use the chopsticks when we go out. You learn pretty quick when there's no fork in front of you. I'm still not great at it, but I'm a lot better than I used to be.
If I were you, I'd start out with some disposable wooden chopsticks. When you master those, you can move onto the plastic ones with the grooves. Then plastic with no grooves. etc. The disposable wooden ones aren't slippery in the least. Training your hand muscles can take some time, but it's much easier and less frustrating when your food isn't falling off the stick all the time.
It just takes time and practice.
Strange world I was raised in, but I definitely learned to use them way before I learned to master a knife and fork. My mum was still feeding me with a fork when I came home one day and ate my own food with my chopsticks like it was completely normal. I guess that day (or that week?) I was in Japanese primary school, and I was hungry and was given chopsticks to help myself Monkey see monkey do. My mum says both my brother and I used them way better than her and my dad did when we were kids. If you're hungry enough, you can master anything! Just go to the next Chinese restaurant with a day-long empty stomach.
Or just sit in front of the TV and hold them in your hand mindlessly. That can work too. When you feel comfortable holding them, try picking up completely random thing--easy stuff like wedges of bread, and maybe some tricky things like your tv remote. Good luck!
