When you purchase new household items

dishes, utensils, food storage containers, do you wash them before putting away?

I always do.

A couple of years ago I was over a friends house, right after her bridal shower and she started putting her new stuff away, without washing.  I thought was was nasty.  Especially dishes, they do tend to get dusty from the packaging.

Re: When you purchase new household items

  • Ha, I just had this dilemma the other day.  I bought a food storage container to put cat food in, and I was like... hmm.. if I don't wash this will it kill the kitties?  Ultimately, I washed it because I got it at Ross and who knows how long it was sitting on a shelf and how many people had handled it.  I'm not extremely good at washing things first, but when it comes to stuff I put in my mouth I tend to wash first.
  • Stuff that will touch food - yes, I wash it first.

I read on another board about people washing clothes before they wear them... I don't do that unless it touches the lady parts.  I will totally buy a shirt and wear it without washing.

  • I used to be bad about it, not out of laziness but just forgetfulness.  After realizing that hey, you're eating what others have had on their hands, I am relentless.

Those shirts sit in factories, on a dirty truck and then in the store where god knows who has tried it on, possibly sans bra. You should really wash all your new clothes first. My DH isn't really anal about many things but he gets so grossed out when he hears people say they didn't wash their new clothes first.

  • Anything for the kitchen gets washed first.  I prefer to wash my clothes first but if I'm in a jam and I run out and buy something to wear for later that day I don't get weirded out wearing it without washing it first.

  • No way do I wash clothes first.  I know it's gross when you think about it, but ignorance is bliss Embarrassed

Plus, I like the way new clothes fit.  After that first wash, sometimes things are not the same.

  • Yes, always.  I also know I should wash my clothes first, but don't always do it.

  • Dishes, and the like, take a ride through the dishwasher first and appliances get rinsed off in the sink before their first use. But clothing...eh, never thought about washing that first unless it came from a thrift store. I suppose a good point has been made here for why I should but I've already gone this long without doing so and, what would you know, it hasn't killed me yet!

    agreed.

but seriously i don't think not washing your new dishware or clothes is the most disgusting thing in the world. there is a lot more "gross" things i question in the world.

i mean do you wash down every beer can and beer bottle you get? those sit in wharehouses and travel as well.

  • if i(or someone in my household) had a compromised immune system and/or sensitive skin/allergies i would wash dishes/food stuffs and clothing.

as i am a normal healthy adult i do not feel the need.

i do follow proper handwashing techniques like a maniac though.

  • Agreed. I think clothes look the nicest before that first wash. Especially sweaters and other things prone to pilling.
