TR: ultrasound & VCUG for UTIs
Anybody's LO been through the ultrasound & VCUG test for urinary tract infections?
Z will be having these on Wednesday, and I'm just wondering what to expect both during & after the tests...
Re: TR: ultrasound & VCUG for UTIs
Kaylie has had both procedures for the same reason. I can't see how old your Z is but DD was 2 1/2 when she had hers done.
The ultrasound will be much easier on both of you than the VCUG and the hardest part will be getting Z to lay still for the tech.
During the VCUG, she could not be sedated (most peds dont' want them sedated as they can't empty their bladder as well) so she was a little bit scared. During the VCUG, they'll insert a catheter and fill her bladder with saline tinted with a special dye they can see on the x-rays. Once they can see her bladder is full, they'll want her to pee onto the table while the catheter is still in place. I can't remember exactly but I think the techs hold a specimen container for her to pee into.
The most difficult thing is getting a potty-trained toddler to pee laying down on a hard table. They'll take x-rays intermittently to see how well she is emptying her bladder. Once her bladder is emptied, then you'll be able to pick her up and it will be over.
Not to scare you, but for DD, I finally had to make the techs remove the catheter towards the end so she could finish emptying her bladder because it was making her too uncomfortable.
Sorry, I know that's a lot of info but feel free to ask questions. Hopefully it all goes as smoothly as possible for you guys!
Thank you for the information! I'd read bits about this here & there online, but it's nice to hear it from someone on this board...
Z is 15 months, so she's not yet potty trained. From what you said, maybe that is to our advantage. Z often throws a fit when we change her diaper (don't know why she hates it so much - but she sure does fight us), so I'm just really hoping this experience doesn't upset her more & make her dread diaper changes even more.
Of course I want to rule out any other problems related to the UTIs, though, so I am glad they're doing the tests. I'm just looking forward to 10 AM tomorrow morning when hopefully the worst part is all over...
Thanks so much!
