What to say on follow-up call

Hi all! I've posted once here but mostly hang out on other boards. I've ventured this way because I've been on a job hunt for a while and you all are very knowledgeable.

I am an attorney and my friend forwarded my resume to his friend to give to his boss for an opening at their firm. Did you follow that? Wink It's been about 3 weeks since he did so, but I know that for 2 of those weeks the boss was out of town. He's been back since June 8th. I'd like to call today to follow up, make sure he received the resume, and let him know how interested I am (without sounding desperate!).

I'm having trouble nailing down exactly what I should say. I want to say more than "just wanted to make sure you got my resume!" but am not sure exactly what to do. It's been a while since I've been in the job market. Any tips are appreciated, tia!

  • "Hi, this is RachieK10. I'm interested in any openings for [position]. MrY, who works in [department], sent a copy of my resume your way and I wanted to make sure you received it. Mr Y (and Mr X, the first friend, if he has knowledge of the place) told me about your firm and I think I'd be a great fit."

Perfect.  And I would add, "would it be possible to meet to discuss any potential opportunities?"

  • Thanks! Of course this is all assuming I can actually get the guy on the phone as lawyers are notoriously hard to reach. :)
