Is Rosa Mexicano any good?

I'm going tonight with my mom and SIL who are in from out of town.  Was hoping for Oyamel but they didn't have any reservations until 10 PM

Re: Is Rosa Mexicano any good?

  • It's good, although I've always felt it's a bit pricey for what you get.

And it annoys the crap out of me that it's not Rosa Mexicana.

  • i've been in new york and it is very good. ditto litasail that it is a bit pricey. could you just go to oyamel? DH & i have gone to jaleo without reservations before.

This exactly, on both the prices and the grammar.

  • i don't think it's good at all, especially given the price.

but i can be snobby about mexican food.

  • I'm with Kastle. I like the drinks - but they are pricey -- and the tableside guacamole. But I'm not a fan of the food....

(but I do like Oyamel, so hopefully they can take you as a walk-in!)

  • Blech.  The only think I like is the guacamole.  Which is GOOD.
  • I actually like it. I've only been to the one at NH, but I can't imagine they are that different. The food is pretty creative, its not the normal sauce covered crap of most Mex places, and their stuff is fresh. I've enjoyed eveything I've had there. While its not Jose Andres, I'd say its quite a ways from blech. Now I'm wondering if downtown is different?

Yes, so annoying!! I agree- it's good, but way too pricey IMO. I actually didn't feel well after eating there- never got physically sick, but I was nauseous (and I don't think I ate too much guacamole).

  • Maybe I always have too many margarita's there but I really enjoy the food!  I'm from New Mexico, lived in Arizona, and often visited Texas and California and loved how different each local style of mexican food was.  I feel the same way about Rosa Mexicano.  It has the mexican spices but in a different format than I've seen.  I've also gone during Restrant week so that is also a factor!  Hope you enjoy whatever you end up doing!

  • The chicken mole was not the best I've had.  I've only been once and it was 4 years ago and havent been back.
  • i've never had a thing there that wasn't terrific! i've tried many different things, and have settled on the carne asada as my absolute favorite dish. and we ALWAYS get the guac.

    * for all you RM guac lovers, the recipe is online! just google rosa mexicano guacamole!

PS - the name bugs the crap out of DH, too!

  • Hi ?Litasail?, we?re sorry to hear that ?it annoys the crap out of you? that our name is Rosa Mexicano.  But, it is the correct Spanish and you?d be surprised how many people don?t know their language specifics as well as they think they do.   Josefina Howard owned and named the restaurant in 1984. She named it after a particular shade of pink that she was very fond of and it still in the East 58th Street location.  Because we?re named after a COLOR and not a female NAME, the correct gender is masculine---all colors are male in Spanish, so ?Mexicano?  is correct.     It hasn?t been that way for 25 years because it?s wrong, but hopefully it will stop bugging you.

Considering that "Mexican Pink" is a pretty dumb name for a restaurant,  most Spanish speakers probably assume that the name should be translated as "Mexican Rose," as in the plant - and most plants are feminine.
