Baby elephant name...

What do you think about the blow up on social media about the names the Toledo Zoo has put to a vote for the new baby elephant? In case you haven't seen it, the keepers suggested Lucas, Chuck or Iain, but the public is pushing hard for the zoo to consider naming him Nicholas, after the 6yr old who collapsed and died at the zoo Thursday.

there are other ways to honor the boy who died (ie: seeing if the zoo would plant a tree or donate a "brick" for the new elephant enclosure in the boys name) than naming the elephant after him.

I think we're in the minority, but I agree. I don't like the whole "mob" mentality some people seem to have about this, and they're basically trying to bully the zoo into naming the elephant Nick.

I think it's a great idea! The little boy was so excited and talked about going to see the new baby elephant at the zoo that morning. What a horrible, horrible tragedy. One minute your child is fine and the next day he is gone. I can not even begin to imagine the pain of this family. If the public wants to name the elephant after Nick, then I say do it. It doesn't sound like bullying to me. It sounds like a lot of people support this little guy whose life was cut way too short and this is a way to honor his name.

i really don't think that's the precedent wants to or should set. a brick as someone had suggested or maybe some other, more 'permanent' memorial yes... but naming the elephant after the poor kid? no.

I also agree that I don't really care for way people are "ganging up" on the zoo to get them to name it after Nicholas. The main reason I don't think its a good idea is because you never know if the animal will stay there or how long it will survive. If it were my son, I would want a more permanent 'memorial' for him, that way, if something happened to the elephant or if he was moved to another zoo, I could still go to the zoo and visit the memorial that was made. I like one of the names for the elephant(already did my voting), but I just feel that naming him Nicholas isn't the right kind of memorial for this little boy.

I just got done reading some of the posts on the toledo zoo fb page and I almost can't help but role my eyes at some of these people. I understand that this was a tragedy and that the little boy was very excited to see the elephants but I just don't see the point in trying to force the zoo to name the new elephant after this little boy. I hope it doesn't come across as insensitive but I just think that there could be a better way to honor him than naming an elephant after him. I know I already said my peace once but I had to get that out after reading some of those comments.

I just heard about this and I feel this is a better option. FWIW, I like the name Lucas.

If I were the parents I would not want an elephant named after my child. I don't think it honors him at all, it wasn't a thought up idea by the zoo or in the namming plan to top it off. I would not want people going to the zoo saying that is nick, he as named after a kid that died.

I really like the name Lucas too. I guess a part of me is against naming the elephant this because it seems like they are just using what happened to put thier family name out there. I mean if the elephant had been named already, they wouldn't be campaining to have it renamed. What if it was a different animal, I just don't see them doing it for the right reason. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just bothers me thta the family is putting this out there and stressing that they think its great but to me it just seems like they have alterior motives.

I feel very sad for the family of this little boy, but I agree with all of you.

I just read the Toledo Zoo FB page and wow, people are just harrassing the zoo.

I think the whole thing has got really out of hand, I read through the Zoo FB page the other day. People are ridiculous! Obviously the Zoo does not want to name the elephant Nick and isn't going to. As a parent I would not want the elephant named after my child, especially after the fight and harassment of the Zoo over it, where is the honor in that?
