Applying within the current company

I am unhappy in my current position as an IT project manager, so I was browsing my companies HR site for job postings.  I found a job that is something I am very interested in.  The job is a meeting and events specialist.  I would be a good fit for the job because I love event planning and have the 2 years of project management experience they are looking for.

My question is, if I apply to this job through the company intranet is there anyway my current boss will find out?  I'm uncomfortable telling him I'm looking for a new job right now, but I also don't want to go behind his back.  Also, if I get an interview its in a different building then where I work, and I'm worried I'll see someone and have to explain what I'm doing in that building.  My H says my boss shouldn't care or take it personally, but it still makes me uncomfortable.  Am I wrong to worry?

Does anyone have any advice for me?

Re: Applying within the current company

  • From my experience most companies require you to let your boss know if you're applying for an internal position. So if that's the case at your company, I'd try and approach your boss ASAP, as positively as possible ("I'm considering this position because I could use Skills X, Y, and Z"). Who knows, he may be an advocate for you in that dept.

  • Yes you should let your current boss know you are applying. Standard practice everywhere I have been.
  • Check with HR on the protocal of internal hires.

In my company they DO NOT notify your supervisor unless you are seriously being considered, usually the 2nd or 3rd interview.  At that point your boss could serve as a reference and advocate for you.

  • I checked the HR policy for this, and it says I only need to notify my supervisor prior to going for an interview.  So, I submitted the application this morning.  If I get a call for an interview I'll tell him.

Thanks for the advice, I didn't realize there would be an official policy.

Now fingers crossed that I get an interview! Smile
