Stupid Hormonal Headaches

For YEARS I get at least 2 headaches in the days leading up to AF.  I don't know if it's the dip in hormones from BC, but it's awful.  Of course while I was PG and BFing I didn't get them, and it was so nice.  They will turn into migranes within a few hours if I don't treat them right and that takes me totally out for the day.

Anyone else get them or have them treated?  I feel like the many doctors I've talked to about the problem basically say "we know why you get them, but we aren't sure how to treat them."  I've tried a few different BC's to see if lower dosages of hormones would help, but they didn't.  This is of course totally different from my heat induced migraines that go from nothing to awful in an hour.

Re: Stupid Hormonal Headaches

  • Do you know if you get them when you are not PG or nursing and not on hormonal BC?

  • That was the original reason I went off of BC.  I started getting migraines more often and I hardly ever get migraines.  (also started getting continous yeast infections..TMI).

My migraines diminished (as well as yeast infections) once I went off of the BC all together.  Maybe not your most ideal situation, but I'd at least try to see if that helped.

  • Thats one reason I can't take BCPs. On my week of taking the placebo pills, I would get raging headaches. Nothing really helped :(

Have you thought about trying Mirena or some other form of BC?

It's been so long, but I don't recall getting them.  I know they are from being on BC I just don't know of any alternative.  I told DH after our 2nd he is on the hook for PG prevention.

  • I get vicious hormone headaches but am not on the pill. I have considered going back on them to see if yhey stop but I get vicious PMS from the pill. It's a toss up really.
