QOTD - 6/14

Since there's not one out there - I figured I'd throw this in the ring.  Is it okay for anyone to put out a QOTD if they think of one and there's not one out there?

So here's one - What's the longest car ride you've ever taken?

Re: QOTD - 6/14

  • When I was in 4th grade (?) my mom packed up the four of us girls and we drove from Livonia, MI to Norfolk, VA to surprise my dad, who was there for Desert Storm, over Thanksgiving break. It took us 17 hours and we got lost in downtown DC.
  • Nothern Michigan to Washington, D.C. which was about 13 hours (plus an extra hour and a half on the way home when we got a flat tire in the middle of the night in rural Michigan about an hour from home).  B and I did this trip in 2004.

That was the longest car ride.  The longest ground transportation that I've taken was a bus ride from northern Michigan to Big Sky, Montana for a ski trip when I was 16.  That was about 35 hours, I believe.  Too long to be on a bus!  (Not sure if this counts, since it wasn't a car.)

  • I think the longest trip was when I drove to visit my friend - GR to Charlotte, NC.  It took about 12 hours if I remember correctly.  My friend and I also drove East Lansing to NY about 10 years ago and I think that was around a 12 hour trip too.

  • Kasa- Your 35 hours definitely counts!

Twice my family of 7 drove from GR to Orlando. Straight through. My Dad is a very determined man.

We were so excited to go when my Dad woke us at about 2 am to get started on our adventure. My Mom has pictures of my Dad carrying me and my little sister to the car. We had crazy night time hair and our blankets. Good times.

  • Livonia, MI to Las Cruces (sp?), New Mexico to Colorado, and back to Livonia, MI.  This was to visit my parents' friends in New Mexico.  I was in Middle School I believe.

And I'm all for multiple QOTD's.  Ask away!

  • MI to Orlando, FL.  In 6th grade while on spring break with my dad, step-mom and siblings.  Wasn't that bad since my dad liked to drive at night.  I remember stopping at Ruby Falls in TN.  I want to go back!
  • We did lots of road trips growing up.  Our first and last days were usually 18-hour days.  I don't remember being bored, but now I think I'd go crazy.

I drove down with a church mission group to Juarez, Mexico in a van.  I don't know how many hours it was, but it was a straight trip from Michigan to Mexico (no hotel stay, just gas/bathroom breaks).  20 hours at least I think.

  • Could we include the QOTD in with the daily randoms post?

The longest car ride I've ever taken was from Naples, FL to Lansing, MI.  About 26 hours with horrible snowy roads.  It was awful.

Personally, I like it better as a seperate thread.  I know some people don't always have time to wade through the randoms post, so it would probably have a higher response/discussion rate if it stands alone.

  •  A couple years ago we drove from Rochester, Mn to Naples, FL.  I think it was around 28 hrs.   I was fresh out of surgery and couldn't drive, so H did it all himself.

A large minority of the board "members" don't venture often into the random thread - the more posts in the thread, the more some people stay away. I think it's great to have the QOTD separate, as it can spawn a conversation of its own.

It was probably GR to New Mexico, in a 12-passenger van on a college class trip.

  • I don't know that it was the longest, but it sure felt like it.  When I was 10 my family drove from Warren out to Kansas to see family.  From there we went to Denver.  And on the way home we drove straight back.  There was no air conditioning.  It was August.  There was a pile up on the highway in St. Louis, and my brother was 2 years old.  I'm pretty sure it took eight months.

I think 26hours to make that trip is blazing fast!  Nice driving!

I guess that's why I never post in randoms because the conversations have already started and I hate jumping in.  Embarrassed  I thought it would be easier to jump in if there were a QOTD to answer, just my thoughts but that's perfectly fine to keep it separate!

Hehe, you kind of proved my point! If people don't open the random thread they won't know there is a QOTD in it, right? Wink

And please know, everyone is always welcome, all the time, in the random thread. Conversations there get started all the time...the more random, the better. And the more voices, the better. Jump in!

    Jump in!  Jump in!

JuliD posted a comment about farting cavemen today, for goodness sakes.  Anything and everything on your mind is welcome in the randoms.  Smile

  • Hmmm...mine probably was in college when I was on the rowing team. We would go to regattas sometimes 15 or so hours away. We travelled all over as a kid. But my brain cannot remember back that far. Lol I am impressed with those of you who can remember so specifically! I am off to read about farting cavemen. Too funny!

  • I think my longest trip was from MI to Miami, but we used to take 2 week long car trips as a family. Even though it was technically split up day to day, 2 weeks in a station wagon with two younger sisters is too long!!
  • We drove straight through from MI to Denver one summer. We stopped on the way back.

The H, Mere and myself drove to MS for Spring Break this year. It was supposed to be 16 hours. It was more like 22. Construction is a pisser. Thankfully our 20 month old is a superstar.
