LOS ANGELES (AFP) ? Michael Crichton, author of more than a dozen best-sellers including "Jurassic Park" and "The Andromeda Strain," has died of cancer in Los Angeles, aged 66, his family said Wednesday in a statement.
"Michael Crichton died unexpectedly in Los Angeles Tuesday, November 4, 2008 after a courageous and private battle against cancer," said a statement posted on the author's website.
Crichton was the author of numerous blockbusters, some of which sold over 100 million copies, and which were translated in 30 languages worldwide.
He was also the creator of the international hit television hospital drama series "E.R."
"The world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us -- and entertained us all while doing so," the statement said.

Re: NER: Michael Crichton died
my read shelf:
Creatively - it was titled Timeline
aaah yes, you'd think I could remember that!
For some reason, just a couple weeks ago I thought he'd died. ?Someone on the radio was referring to him in the past tense, and I just assumed he'd died without me knowing about it. ?They weren't talking about his death, but they were talking about him as though he were dead. ?I was surprised that I hadn't heard, but in the last year or two I've spent weeks out of reach of news, so I figured it happened during one of those times.
I guess these people were just idiots, and I'm better informed than I thought.?
