Housing Situation

I know we've discussed this before - but I'm just curious what is everyone's housing situation? Are you in a house or apartment? Renting or own? Is your house all finished the way you want it or in the middle of some remodel projects? Is this where you plan on staying or do you hope to move somewhere else in the future?

Re: Housing Situation

  • We currently live in a 1 1/2 story, 2 bedroom house that DH bought about 5 years ago as a bachelor, I've gotten to help do some repainting and such the last few years to help make the house feel a little more like my own. The upstairs of our house isn't very climate controlled so it's pretty worthless most of the time besides being used as storage. Because of this we're really only living in a one bedroom house which is why we need to move before we even think about TTC.

The worst part of our housing situation is we live just outside of our local airport which has been trying to rezone so they can potentially expand when they can get the federal funding. Well for that to happen they need to purchase our house which means it basically has no resale value at the moment! So right now we have an offer out to the airport to purchase our house now so we can be out and done and move on with our lives! I'm sick of having this drama hanging over our heads!

We've also been continuously looking for a new place as well, we live on a small acreage and DH does not want to move back into town so our choices are limited but we keep hoping something perfect will pop up and work out for us just right!

  • Pearl2006 - I really hope that you and your DH are able to find something that you like soon!  Maybe the airport will offer you guys a ton for your house :-)

We currently live in an apartment.  My DH just graduated this past December and was able to get a job right away.  We had to move out of state for it, and we were not in a position at the time to buy right away.  Plus from when I was in the hospital last September for my blood clots, I have some pretty hefty medical bills (even though I had insurance!)  We also have school loans, credit cards, etc that we are trying to pay down/off this year.  We are hoping that we will only have to spend another year and a half in an apartment before we buy a house.  We will also be moving from our one bedroom to a two bedroom apartment this December.  The thought of moving three times(even if it is from one apartment to another in the same complex) in 2 years seems very overwhelming - but hopefully that will be it for a long time because we'll find an amazing house :-)

  • We own a condo.  It is 3b/2.5bath.  It is on three floors so we have plenty of room to spread out.  We love our neighborhood and our neighbors.  There is some fixing up we would like to do like replace some carpeting and buy some new furniture, but we just bought two new patio doors which we had to special order due to their size.

  • We rent a 1 bd / 1 bath apartment. It's not bad... the building is old so it has it's quirks, but it get the job done. The neighborhood isn't great, but the rent is pretty cheap compared to similar apartments so we were willing to settle.

We have some debt we want to get paid off and then we'll be working toward buying a house.

  • We live in a rented house (3 bedroom)

Not at all finished actually still in boxes :)

We hope to move in 2 years into our own house.

  • We own a townhouse.  It's about 1750 sq feet, 2 bed, 2 bath.  It's just the right size for us and our puppy.  When we decide to have kids, we'll put this on the market.
  • In a 2 BR, 1 BA apartment at the moment.  As trin said, it gets the job done.  Right out of college, DH lived with me and my parents and then we moved into our current apartment.  We don't hate apartment living at all, just the particular ones we're in now.  At the time of the move, we didn't have any money.  The neighborhood is sooo so bad and the buildings are older than dirt and used to be the Sect 8 housing.  Yeah.

We've been looking for a townhouse to move into and will probably be moving either next month or in August.

We are currently saving up for a home.  Slowly.  A good time line for us is owning a home in the next 5 years.  We want to take plenty of time to save because we don't want a dump. We'd rather save a little more and buy something that could potentially be our forever home.

  • We bought a house 3/17. 3br 1.5 bath two floors with about 1200-ish square feet and a half finished basement. But we *live* in a 2 br 1.5 bath apartment while we remodel the house. We painted every room and have replaced light fixtures. We removed carpet through the whole house and are in the process of refinishing the hardwood floors (all sanded, now have to put down poly). Then we can move.

  • We are renting a 2bedroom/1 bath house. We love our place! It was build in the 40s and has lots of build ins, arched doorways and a nice fireplace. Its not very big, 900sqf but it has a half finished basement (not included in the sqf)  that we use as a home gym, sewing room and laundry area. It also has a huge fenced in backyard and garge that DH uses as a shop.

We are planning on living here for another 3-4 years while I finish up school. And depending on the when and what DH goes back to grad school for we my be moving states again. We don't want to buy a home yet cause we're still not 100% settled down. And when we buy we want it to be our forever home, that we raise our children in.

  • We own a 4 bedroom 21/2 bath home.  We bought in 2007 and are all settled.  We don't plan on selling any time soon.  I didn't think I would love owning our home because of all the yard work and such... but I actually enjoy gardening!

  • We live in a 1 bedroom apartment.  H is in school, so buying is not an option for us right now.  Plus San Diego is expensive, so that doesn't  help.  Our apt does have a small bonus room off of our bedroom.  It would be perfect for a nursery (one of the things that drew us to this apt).  We love it, but we are starting to feel a little cramped.  As we start to pick up more baby things as we get farther along, I'm sure that feeling will be worse.

Luckily we will be high on the list for school family housing at UCSD because we're pregnant.  Hopefully in the fall (and if not in the spring) we'll be able to move into a more affordable 2BD 2BA at school.  There are a lot of nice options, and there will be tons of other families around with one parent in school.  I'm excited for that :)

  • We own a 4 bed 2 bath house, where we live with a Japanese couple who's rent helps us pay the mortgage.  It is currently on the market so we can clear some debt and move into something bigger.  I know it hasn't been on the market long, but I am already anxious about it not selling.

Ideally we are looking for something with a bit more land, so we can get another dog and maybe some goats and cows.  But that may be a long way off yet!  We have one of our rentals on the market at the moment as well.

  • We live in a 2 bed 1 bath apartment in a two family house. We are not looking to buy in NY because the prices are too crazy and taxes too high.  We are dreaming about moving to Atlanta, but that depends on the job market... so basically, we will be trapped renting in NY until times get better. It's not that bad though, I have rented for years. It's harder on DH because he has always owned homes.  He actually owns a townhouse in Atlanta, but is renting it out because my job is in NY.
  • DH and I decided not to live with each other until we got married. When we were looking for an apartment we knew we would live there for at least 3 years (until he finished school), so we wanted a place that we felt like home in. Now it's looking like we'll be here a 4-5 years because we would really like our next home to be a house.

We live in the first floor of a two family house and have 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. We are so happy here! The house is fairly old, which is what we're used to and love, so it has tons of character! Our upstairs neighbors are so nice and we've never had any noise problems with them. Our kitchen is not a bad size, we have a gorgeous dining room, and great light. Half of the basement is ours, so we have a great amount of storage space. Our apartment came with our own washer and dryer in the basement that we don't need to share (a giant bonus for me!!). We also share a small back yard. The only problem we have is that we can't use the driveway or garage because those are rented by our upstairs neighbors. Our street has decent parking, but we have to use the driveway when it snows because street parking isn't allowed. We've done a lot of decorating so our apartment is pretty much complete and we are going to be very comfortable for the next few years.

  • We live in a 3br/2ba townhouse that I've owned since 2008. Aside from small cosmetic things (like installing a bar in the basement) and our never-ending  gardening, we are very much settled until I get my PhD and get the heck out of here :)

  • We currently live in a 3 bedroom/2 bath cape cod style home that I had built in 2004, before I met DH.  It serves our needs, however the layout is not fantastic to raise small children in (kids were not on my radar at the time).  The master bedroom is on the main level & 2 bedroom are up.  The upstairs bedrooms are both 20'X16' and have a jack & Jill bath.  we could move up there and use the other room as a nursery if we need to.

We both currently commute over 100 miles each everyday (seperately, I go north he goes north-west).  We are hoping to sell our house in a month or two (we already have a buyer, just have to decide to sell) & move closer to our jobs.  DH & I are both in the middle of changing some things at work though so we are letting that settle down first.

  • We live in a 2br 1ba apartment that we rent.  We have lived here for 2 years and recently signed a lease for a 3rd year.  When DH graduates grad school, we will probably move.  At that point it will probably be a different city.  Until then though, we love our apartment!

  • We just moved in late March from a one bedroom one bath apartment to a three bedroom, two bath house that we bought.  I don't miss that tiny apartment for a dang second!

Our house is so perfect for us just starting out, and I fully expect to have our first kid here eventually, and then rent it out and buy up.

The house was remodeled inside, contemporary styling which is totally us: granite bathrooms and kitchen, and original light hardwood floors, cute garden/backyard, and grassy front as well, crown molding, etc., and we lucked out with friendly neighbors who wave at you when they see you, ask about your pets, and would tell you if something suspicious was happening in the neighborhood.

We luckily have no renovations to do, and simply need to make it "ours" .  I hope we are just as lucky with the second house someday!
