Nurses/medical people

Last wednesday i got a tetanus booster (the 10 year) because i had not had once since i was a young teen.

How long does it take for symptoms to go away? My arm still has a 2" swollen circle around the injection site and itches like crazy.

Just wondering if that is out of the ordinary or if I should call my Dr to have her check it out....haven't had one in so long, i don't remember!

Re: Nurses/medical people

  • I'd call tomorrow if it's not going down. B/c a week seems like a long time.  The swollen/itchiness is b/c you are actively building immunity to tetanus + whatever else was in there, and now the antibodies are fighting off "the bad stuff" at the injection site.

I had one a couple of months ago (it no has the pertussis vaccine as well, since there is a huge recurrence of wooping cough).  My arm killed all week... I was painting that weekend and it was excruciating!

The last one I got did last close to a week... I had a fever, could barely move that arm, had a gigantic bump, etc.

  • It should last for a couple days but can last up to a week. If the redness is severely red or you can't do normal activities or use your arm or a fever then i would call the doctor. I've never heard of itching. I just re-read and it was last week. So i'd call. I wonder if the injection site is infected...

They didn't give you the information sheet about the vaccine when they gave it to you?

  • Is it possible you had it less than 10 years ago?  That is what happened with the one I had 10 years ago.  I had gotten bit by a rat at work (gross, I know), and couldn't remember when my last shot had been.   I failed to remember the shot I got only 5 or so years before.   My reaction was super strong b/c I had enough antibodies built up already.

And the itchiness is from the inflammation.

  • No clue when the last time i got it was, but it had to have been at least 8 or 9 years.

I called my Dr and they said to go to the med center here at work for them to check it out and make sure its not infected. its not. its just a stupid local reaction, which is not uncommon for me with all of my allergies. so i dont have to worry about it. its still freaking annoying, though!!
