Let's talk Father's Day

What are you doing for the day?

Last year we had an itty-bitty baby so we didn't do much.  I want to do something super fun this year.  Of course the zoo is always a good time, but we go a lot.  I want something unique.

I know we'd both love to pack a picnic and hike around for an hour or two before settling in for lunch.  Any suggestions on good places to make that happen?  Bonus points for beautiful views :)

Also, what are you giving as a gift?

What are you doing for the day? Maybe go out to lunch? Nothing major, as we don't want to make a huge deal out of little *holidays* like this, until El is old enough to understand, that it's a special day for daddys/mommys

I know we'd both love to pack a picnic and hike around for an hour or two before settling in for lunch.  Any suggestions on good places to make that happen?  Bonus points for beautiful views :) We had a picnic at Brown's Woods, I think that's what it's called, off of 63rd. Given it's not flooded, that's where H asked me to marry him. Smile

Also, what are you giving as a gift?  No gifts.

  • Not sure what we are doing for the day but DH wanted a hammock so that is what he is getting.. My dad is getting "True Grit" and FIL is getting some golf club covers from his alma mater..

  • My husband's parents belong to Urbandale Golf & Country Club, so the four of them (his parents, him and his brother) are going golfing in the morning.  I also bought him two massages from the Signature Male Groupon last week.  Our son is making gifts for him at day care and they have a special Father's Day snack Friday afternoon that we'll go to.

Still need to figure out what we're doing with my dad - probably just dinner or BBQ.

  • I think we're going to the Ledges State Park by Boone to have a picnic/hike for Fathers Day.  I got DH a new phone.
  • I LOVE parking at the saylorville lake visitors center and hiking down to the coneflower picnic area. Beautiful views along the way and when you get there you can sit at a park and play and eat! Since Ella will be gone this weekend camping I already let her get Adam's present. She picked him out some homemade root beer, a reclining quad chair, a pitch fork (for our compost) and the game Farkle because she thinks it is a funny word to say! He, Jovie and I are going to Felix and Oscar's this weekend to use our coupon too!
  • December, Ella's going camping? Wow!

We're going to Chicago for a family weekend that includes my stepson. We didn't go overboard on gifts this year, but I'm looking forward to quality family time.

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.

Hey Ally, how far is this hike? I need to know that Maya would be able to make it back :)

We don't have any concrete plans yet.  Maya is making something for him at school and they have a Daddy event on Friday.  I am working on Saturday :(  On Sunday we will probably go to my parents house to grill out.  I don't even know what I'm getting him yet.  Probably something work-out related.

  • Yup, Ella leaves Friday morning to go back to D-Ville to go camping with my family! I am having insane anxiety about her being so far away and wondering what happens if she has a seizure. I can rest assure she will be ok though, both my parents were EMT's and since my sister will be with her, she has seen them first hand. I have never spent this many days not seeing her though :-( Nicole, the hike is a little over 3 miles round trip, I think...it has a lot of 'butt busting' hills though! My legs usually scream at me while jogging up them :-)

  • we too are going hiking either at Ledges or Saylorville and will do some geocaching too.

Got him the Groupon awhile back for a 12 lap drive around the Iowa Speedway - he loves racing. It is a combined father's day/birthday present.

  • Wow, I'm suprised at how many of you hike too.

What kind of carrier do you use?  We have a hand me down hiking pack (I think it's evenflo) but I really want to get a newer, nicer one.

ERGO. We use it for 2-3 hours hikes. We also have a kelty carrier, but Neena doesn't like it as much.

I love going to Ledges State Park.  It's a little drive to get there but so pretty and great for hiking and having a picnic.

No help on Father's Day gifts, I just got DH a t-shirt with a picture of C on it that says I love you Dad.  Boring I know but he has everything else he could possible want.  Maybe I'll add C's handprints to the back of the shirt once I get it but that's about it.

  • The girls are giving adam an annual father's day picture mug from costco, a dad's grilling book to go w/ his new grill, and a gift certificate for adam and his brother to play 18 holes at bos landon (i think he'll really appreciate some down time and time w/ his brother).

Molly, I have 2 kelty carriers that I want to sell. One is like an ergo and the other is a straight up hiking carrier that has the brackets to stand alone. Let me know if your interested.

  • The kids got DH a new driver and putter for Father's Day. I think he and I will golf on Saturday and have family time on Sunday - I'll probably cook a big meal as I start my new job on Monday and foresee big dinners as a thing of the past :)

I have a beco butterfly.  I like it because you can take it off and put it on another person without having to take the baby out of it.

As far as father's day gifts, he's getting something for brewing beer (I really have no idea what it is, i just told him to order it and gave him my credit card! lol!)  We are also attempting to do the dad picture like jennrs linked.  Photoshoot #1 was a giant fail, so we shall see if I get it done tomorrow.

I have to work on Sunday.  I feel really bad, but dh left me home alone on mother's day, so he could go to the Kentucky Derby.  I told him we're even Stick out tongue

  • What are we doing?  My dad will be here, so we're going to entertain him at the house with my fun boys.  I asked DH what he wants for a special meal and haven't gotten much out of him on that subject...hopefuly he'll get back to me on that.

We don't usually do much for each other, or for the day.  It just never works out.  It always ends up being a crappy day, or crappy attitudes.

Gift:  I tried to do a D a d photo project, using the boys to form the letters, and it was a fail.  So we're settling for a pencil holder made from a juice container, decorated in early toddler with handprints on it from both boys.  I think DH uses a pencil at work...  If not, he can love it anyway.  I'm on a limited budget.

Hopefully we'll also be able to make some of his favorite cookies, Chocolate Crinkles on Friday, or today.  My dad loves date bars, and I still need ingredients for that.  We're good bakers over here.  :)
