QOTD: Wednesday

What's the worst natural disaster you've been in?

Re: QOTD: Wednesday

  • I'm not sure if this counts as "natural" but I was asleep in my bf's cabin when it caught fire and completely burned down.

Otherwise just a couple LA earthquakes that weren't disasters but scared the crap outta me.

  • Tornadoes in Kansas when I was kid. I remember hightailing it to my grandparents' basement.

Tropical Storm Flo that RAINED AND RAINED AND RAINED 2 years ago. It was actually kind of awesome because everything was flooded so we didn't have to go to work. DH & I got some beer & never lost out power or cable. We just drank & ate & watched Harry Potter.

  • Hurricane Gloria in '85 when we lived on Long Island. It was a Category 4 when it hit the Bahamas, then weakened to a 3 when it hit LI. We had a 100+ yr. old tree fall on the edge of the roof and through the garage. No memory of it though, I was 4 mo. old.

  • I guess Hurricane Floyd and Charlie. Neither were that bad though.
  • Probably taking into account how it affected me personally, I guess tropical storm Allison. I was living in Tallahassee with my sister & bff. It completely flooded our house and we had sewage back up (toilets, sinks etc.) We were displaced and homeless for several months with pets. Then there was a nightmare situation with our dickwad landlords and eventually we had to find a new place rather than moving back into our old place. To this day if I saw them I would feel a strong urge to shank them.

  • Hurricane Ivan was the first hurricane I really experienced and it was really bad. A tree fell on my car but that was the most real damage I had. I wasn't able to get to work for a week and when I did get there it took 2 hours. The neighborhood I lived in had a lot of trees down, it took a couple days to cut ourselves out of the neighborhood. H and I started dating right after Ivan. He and his family had a lot of damage. He lived at home still and his mom's house had 6 trees fall on it. One tree fell through the ceiling in his room right over his bed while he was in bed.

I was going to say I haven't actually been through one but apparently I have, LOL. I was born in March '85 on LI.  I've also been in Jax for some of the minor "hurricane" rain that we've gotten over the years and had a tree fall on the garage we were having a hurricane party in.

Other than that, no natural disasters. Unfortunately I was living in NY for a very non-natural disaster but that's a whole different subject.

  • Hmm... I was in the convention center in Tallahassee in 1995 when a tornado peeled part of the roof off like a tuna can. A few years ago a freak hailstorm over the town center left $4k in dents on my car, but I was in Ann Taylor. Those two were probably the worst.
  • Hurricane Erin in 95 put a tree through my bedroom and I played in the eye, so that was pretty bad, but at the time it was fun for me since I was just a little kid.

Ivan, OTOH, was intense and very scary and even though my mom and I evacuated to Montgomery we had damage and the power was out for a couple of days there too.  My dad wouldnt even let us come home untill there was power and that was at least 3 weeks after it was over.  Driving down 65 and seeing the damage get steadily worse and worse was heartbreaking.  Our neighborhood was one of the worst hit on this side of town and the golf course was a wreck for a long time afterwards, the club house just reopened only 3 years ago.

  • Just some minor hurricanes and tropical storms.  I don't think I've ever even lost power for more than a few hours.  I've been lucky so far.  *knocks on wood*

    I totally remember that...
