If you have a stand-up or chest freezer...

What size do you have?  And do you have particular reason for choosing one over the other?  We are starting to think about getting either a chest freezer or stand-up one for our basement before the babies come.  TIA!

Re: If you have a stand-up or chest freezer...

  • We have a chest freezer.....it's pretty big, I would guess about 4' W x 3' H x 3' D or so.  My mom gave it to us, so we didn't pick it out.  To be honest, it is huge and is too big for us.  We have the whole bottom layered with milk jugs filled w/ water (it works more efficiently when it's full).  Then again, it is just DH and me, and we don't cook much right now.  My mom used it to stock stuff for a family of 7.  :o)
  • we have looked at them before but just ended up getting a 2nd fridge for the basement (that's the beer fridge) but when we were looking, i for sure liked the standup's better then the chest.   it just seems like with a chest freezer that it would be harder to get to things on the bottom.  IL's have a stand up & it's huge but it's nice because everything doesn't get lost in there and can be organized on the different shelves, door shevles, etc...

  • I have a stand up freezer that is the size of a fridge (the kind with the freezer on the top)

I wanted a stand up one because my parents have the chest and things get 'lost' or forgotten about in the chest. The chests are usually larger, so it really depends what you are looking to use the freezer for.

We have two fridges and then the stand up freezer, so that's plenty for us.  The stand up is mainly full with BM, which is the whole reason we got one.

  • I have a 5.1cu ft chest freezer.  It's small.  DH refused to get a larger one.  It is still full of breastmilk.  We haven't been able to use our side by side freezer OR chest freezer for real food in a year.  Get at least a 7cu ft one.  Can you tell I'm still irritated with DH about this, a year later?

  • We have a chest freezer.  Why chest?  because it was given to us for free.  If I had the choice I probably would have still gone with chest becasue of the space I had available.  We have a nice set up now where it is located.  We have storage shelves above it and what not.  The biggest issue I have is that I can't reach things at the bottom.  I am only 4'10" so my arms just don't go that far.

  • We have a stand up freezer. It's probably over 30 years old and it was free. We keep a lot of costco sized cuts of meat in there and we have a couple of frozen jugs of water in there so it's not constantly running. It's probably around 7 cubic feet of space way too much for H and I. We entertain a lot so I've got big trays of Mac&Cheese and Lasagne in there too. It's easy to see where everything is so my preference will always be stand up over chest freezer.

Same thing, but I can't remember the dimensions.

  • My parents have a chest freezer, not sure of the size but it's pretty big.  I will say that things to tend to get lost and it's hard to organize.  But it does the job.  We also have a chest one but haven't used it yet, was given to us.

  • We have 2.  We started with a 7 cubic feet chest freezer but it was always so full, so DH purchased a 9 cubic feet chest freezer as well.

My DH is an avid hunter so that is why we need the freezing space.  We also buy in bulk so I freeze ground turkey, chicken, shredded cheeses, bread, etc...
