outside plants

What's going on in your garden/landscaping?

Our clematis bloomed this week.  It makes me soooooo happy.

I also found a seedling from Jim's grandma's (dying) bleeding heart.  Phew.  I've been pretty nervous about it because it's getting less showy and smaller every year, and now that we have this, there might be a chance for a nice plant next year.  A few of the plants around the house are left over from when his grandparents lived here, and I feel a sense of stewardship when I care for them.

And we have a carpet of lettuce.  It's so darn cool!

  • I'm jealous of your lettuce.  Mine didn't last long this year.

My little container vegetable garden seems to be doing okay.  I have three pots of basil and already made my first batch of pesto.  I also have two pots of tomatoes, one of cucumbers, and one of beans.  They seem to be coming along nicely.

As far as the rest of our landscaping... I hate it.  I think it looks awful.  The little trees that we do have are mostly half dead or just very deformed from being pruned by deer.  The shrubs and lillies that I have around the house look unruly, but I don't know what to do with them.  The centerpiece of our little front garden -- a Japanese maple -- didn't do good over the winter and is also now half dead.  I don't know what to do about any of it, and don't really have the will to do anything since my previous efforts haven't worked out at all.  I wanted to pull out the worst of our trees this year and plant some sort of evergreen, but B and I disagreed on the best way to do that, so it never happened.  I wish we would have hired a landscaping company when we first bought the house five years ago, but now it doesn't seem worth it since we're thinking about moving in a few years.  Blerg.

Landscaping.....eh, I have one PW purple wave petunia planter outside right now.  It looks great, but having only one planter looks kind of sad.

We do have some cilantro that is HUGE.  I'm going to have to find a recipe to put it in because it's getting really big.  We've also got some tiny buds on our jalapeno plant.  I can't wait until those things are ready to eat late this summer!

  • My landscaping efforts from last fall seemed to have paid off. My spring flower's came in nice and big too. Right now my Daisy's are growing like crazy and have a bunch of buds. Hostas that I split and moved last year are thriving this year and also have a good amount of flowers coming through. Peonies in back are starting to open and my lilac bush actually flowered this year. I only got 2 iris' to bloom this year but both of my hydrangea's look to be giving me a few blooms. What I'm most excited about is that the hibiscus I got on sale late last year is growing! I'll be so excited if it blooms. I told DH if it does I'm taking it with us when we move.
  • Oh, watching everything sprout and bloom has been so much fun in this house!  When we bought/moved in everything was still sow covered, so we had no idea what was out there.

The previous owners did an excellent job with landscaping.  Everything is just horrible over grown right now.  Seriously the UPS man needs a machete to get to my front door. But I cannot wait for next spring so I can get out there and start splitting and replanting things and adding a few plants of my own!

Right now we have 6 rhododendrons in full bloom in the back yard.  I love them!  We also have about 10 hydrangeas that are budding.  Some of them are HUGE!  I can't wait to see them in full bloom.  Otherwise there are probably 15 day lilies  getting ready to bloom. (That are in serious need of some splitting) and some of the largest hostas I have ever seen.  I am talking 5 ft by 5ft!

My highlight in the yard so far has been the magnolia tree, the plum tree and the rhododendrons.
