Anyone live near the railroad in C. Rapids?
The Nest considers the real spelling a swear word. Other cities along the railroad too....
I'm wondering how obnoxious the noise is, and if trains run 24/7 on it? I know the Northstar commuter rail runs there, but I'm assuming other trains also run it? We've just fallen in love with a house a few blocks away from there--but the proximity to the tracks explains why this beautiful house keeps dropping in price. I'm thinking I'll just have to go see the house and wait until I hear a train come by to know how loud it will be, but I have no idea if they run at all hours of the night.

How close to the tracks is the house? When was the house built? I'd go tour and hope a train passes while you're there. Before we found our house, H and I went to a ton of open houses, including quite a few by the train tracks in St Paul (Como/Roseville area.) We went to one open house for a house built in the 50s that was just a few houses down from the tracks, and you couldn't hear a single thing (the windows were even cracked open!) We went across the tracks to another open house (this one built in the 80s? much newer) and you could feel the train passing.
We currently live in an apartment building by the same tracks. It's near the big interchange thing in St Paul, so we have at least 3-4 trains/hr (depending on the day/time.) When our windows are closed we can't hear a thing. But when it's raining or humid, the trains make the most awful screeching noise. Regardless, we got used to it pretty quickly.
Ditto PPs- I used to live in an apartment that overlooked 94, and the sound of traffic became comforting to me. When I go home to Central WI, the silence is deafening!
wow. that got really long. Really- it depends on how well the house was built, and how much noise bothers you.

It looks about a block, maybe 2. It's hard to judge because the road just curves away from it...but I'm thinking you could easily see the train passing out the back windows. It was built in 1987 but looks a lot newer than that. Must have been recently updated or something.
We'll definitely tour it, so I hope the train comes by while we're there! I sleep with a fan on at night no matter what for the white noise, so I'm sure it wouldn't bother me too much. If I can feel the vibration in the house though- that's another story!
my read shelf:
Well you all calmed my fears a bit! I'm definitely more open to living that close now.
We have lived in the area for over 4 years now and often take Main Street to go to Riverdale. I don't even think I can count on one hand the number of times a train has gone by. Maybe if we lived right on the tracks that would be a different number, but I feel like we drive that way quite a bit.
I would definitely take a look at the house before ruling it out. Maybe if there are neighbors outside you could ask them about the noise level.
We live about 2 blocks from the train tracks in C00n Rapids. I don't hear them when I'm home unless its completely silent, then I might feel a tiny bit of vibration, but only if I focus on it.
Train horns are not allowed to sound in the area, so you wouldn't have to worry about that. Overall, this is actually a very quiet area to live in.
I live just a few blocks from the tracks. I don't hear the train when all the windows and doors are closed, and at night it sounds more like soft thunder.
The freight train doesn't sound it's horn during the night, and I don't think it does during the day, either. The commuter train does sound. I would agree with PP that the train comes through about x5/day and the commuter during (duh) commute hours.
You kind of get used to it. It just another sound in the neighborhood - you'll also have to get used to fire truck (there is a station near by) and the ambulances from Unity and Mercy hospitals (which aren't too often).
If you are right on the tracks, it could be annoying. I would spend a day in the neighborhood (or at a park nearby) and see what you think.
This is me vaguely remembering... but you're an RN right? If so do you work in the area (Unity/Mercy) and do you like it?
I'm still stuck in my new grad phase 2 years post graduation (trying to get out of home care and nursing home stuff), but will hopefully find something in that area in the next few years. Just ignore all that if you're not the one who's an RN.
Thanks again everyone...thank goodness this house we're looking at is still an active sell because I'm about to go crazy looking at all of our other favorites that are short sales! Hopefully we can go check it out really soon.
That's me!
I'm an LPN and start my last semester in August for the RN mobility program. So, it's still LTC for me, too. Are you an LPN or RN? I can't wait to finish up with school and hopefully get back into acute care...
I'm an RN (SCSU). I graduated at the worst possible time, and then got into home care which ended up being more of a curse than a blessing because I got my year+ experience but it wasn't the right experience. Now I'm too qualified for new grad programs, but not qualified enough to get into acute care! I'm in a TCU with PresHomes now though and it's a crazy amount of experience compared to home care. Hopefully the economy turns around and this stepping stone gets me into something I'll love long term!
Congrats on starting your last semester! The programs are tough, but for good reason. If they were easy I don't think many would pass boards.
Ah, yes, the terrible, "RN with experience so not a new grad, but not acute care experience so we won't hire you." I don't understand it at all. Why not just say LTC/TCU doesn't count at all?
Hopefully something will open up, but I know some hospitals just use a generic "New Grad" application, so it's a bit difficult to separate yourself from the bunch. Have you tried looking for just a casual RN job at a hospital to get your foot in the door?
Yeah, but right now I have 2 part time jobs (was told I'd be able to go FT with the TCU but don't foresee that happening anytime soon), so I just want to move into one FT position so I can start gaining PTO/benefits. I haven't had any of that since I graduated. =( I'm just gonna keep pushing till I get something!
