Ladies, I NEED YOU!!!

First of all, lemme say that I feel awful showing up (after only posting sporadically) and making this full on attention whore post.

Also, I know I am breaking all the rules here, but whatever... I'd come back and tell you girls if it didn't work out anyway.

So here's the deal.  My period was 3 days late so I peed on a stick last night.  Actually I peed on two of the cheapo brand I keep in bulk, then hubby went  out and bought one of the digital 1st Response ones.  All three say I am preggers.

There wasn't as much jumping up and down as there was genuine shock.  We had been planning to go see a fertility doctor since I'm an old bag.  I thought we were going to need help.  Also...I'm pretty sure I'm not ready...but that's another topic.

SO there it is....I peed on a stick, now what do I do?  Did you girls all rush off to the doctor, or did you wait till 8 weeks.  Most of what I read on the other forums say wait.  My mum says go.   What did you guys do?

Re: Ladies, I NEED YOU!!!

  • YAY!!! Because of your age (Im pretty sure from what I remember) you are high risk. I would at least call your dr and let them know. They will schedule an appt for you and might have you come in right away and might make you wait. My OB regardless of risk has his patients come in when they find out at 4-5 weeks to do an u/s to make sure it's a sticky baby and there isn't any miscarriage risks or make sure it isn't multiples. WOOHOO FOR BABY!!!
  • Awww, congrats!  Don't panic.

I'm not trying to get pregnant yet, but you should call your OB/GYN right away to make an appointment.  They will not need to see you for several more weeks unless they determine you to be high risk, but you should call now to make sure you get a first appointment within an appropriate time frame.  If you haven't started pre-natal vitamins, etc, they'll want to get you on top of all that ASAP.  You need to talk to your doctor and get the ball rolling even if you don't need to rush into the office just yet.

    Good luck; you'll be ok!

  • Congrats! We were in shock as well and we weren't doing anything to stop getting pregnant so it really could have happened anytime. I keep telling myself you are never ready.

I called my doctor I think a weekish later and they didn't want to see me till 8 weeks.

  • yay!!!!!  Congrats!!!

In november when we had a miscarriage, I had called the day I got the BFP.  The following week I started spotting etc, so since I had already called them, they were ok having me come in for blood work, which confirmed the miscarriage.

This time around, I waited about a week before I called.  I think it was b/c i was somewhat cautious from the last time.

Even after calling, my first appointment wasn't going to be until about 4 weeks later.  But then I ended up having an early appointment and ultrasound due to spotting.  I say, it's up to you!!! :-)

    Congrats!

  • Congrats and OMG. I'd be totally OMG even though I believe we are the same age? 34?

I'd call my doctor b/c I have OCD and would have to go, immediately.

  • Thanks for all the words of encouragement.

Stef, yuppers, we're pretty much the same age.  I'm 35.

Moleson...how far along were you the first time?  If you don't mind me asking.  Feel free to ignore completely.

I'm a bit crampy and a little paranoid after discovering the term "sticky baby" last night.

It feels like my period is going to come any minute.

I left my favourite OB/GYN in maryland.  This is a sucky time to have to go hunting down a new doctor.  Chris just called the place I had my last pap smear done and he says it was "overwhelming'.  I think he hung up before he made an appt.  hahahaha

If I remember correctly, I was just over 4 weeks along when I found out and just under 6 weeks when miscarried.

    Yay!  That's freaking awesome news!

I called my general physician and went in for a confirmation appointment.  Then, I called my (new) OB/GYN to schedule an appointment.  They do a first appointment at 8 weeks, based on last monthly period, so it was good to call early so that I could get an appointment time that was convenient for me.

The "confirmation" from my GP was just another pee test, but at least for my insurance, I apparently needed a referral to the OB, so they needed that confirmation first.

  • OMG, hells to the yeah!  I'm hoping for a sticky baby!!  I would also run off to doctor ASAP, but I also don't know any better.

I know you're not ready for motherhood, but when will you ever be, I mean honestly?

Yay for old bags!  I'm right there with ya :)

Also, some cramping and/or spotting can be normal at this time.  It can even just be implantation bleeding.  I had some light cramping/spotting one day in the few days before my BFP that I'm positive were from implantation.  I even told H that I thought my period was coming, and he innocently asked if that was "okay" since we'd be on a plane to London.  I was like, no!  Bears can smell it in the air and will attack the plane!

I would just try to relax.  I was in the same position, that I didn't have an OB/GYN when I got my BFP, so that's why I went to the GP for official confirmation.  I also didn't see my GP until after I was back from our almost 2 week trip, so I was like 5-6 weeks when I did the confirmation appointment.

Even though 35 is when they start the cutoff for "advanced maternal age" - which, seriously?  FU medical community! - you shouldn't actually be considered high risk without other factors.  My doctor specifically said that I'd get the same treatment (first u/s at 10-12 weeks) even if I was over 35 (unless waaaaay over), unless there were other factors, like previous miscarriage.

One reason to get doctor confirmation is that, god forbid anything happens, but if something happens, it is considered a miscarriage, and you'll get different (read: more) care/treatment with the next pregnancy.  Apparently they treat it differently if you just SAY you were pg and it wasn't confirmed by a doctor.  At least that's what the girls on the GP board say.

  • Congrats! I would definitely call now, because even if they don't need to see you, an OB can get booked fast. I didn't go until week 10 because there were no openings with mine.

As far as cramping goes, I had horrible cramps when I first found out - I swore I was getting my period, and I even thought it was going to be extra bad because I don't  usually get cramps like that. OB said it was totally normal and it's just the uterus starting to stretch; sometimes it hurts because it's been one size for so long and suddenly it has to get bigger, even at only a few weeks along.

    Eep - one more!

I wandered over to The Bump after I got my BFP, and made the mistake of reading the 1st Tri board, and to a lesser extent my Birth Month Board (BMB).

While I lurve my BMB now, it and 1st Tri were rough for the first trimester.  Every day there were new posts about girls miscarrying, and it was very hard to (a) not read them, and then (b) not be paranoid about whether I was having any of those same symptoms.

  • Hooray! Yes doc visit ASAP!I will send you email later on!

  • Yay for you (and DH)!  I have no experience, but I think the other girls had a good point about calling the doc.  Even if they tell you to wait a few weeks, they can start you on vitamins and will at least have you in their books.

    Good luck!

    This

Also right before I got my BFP I was telling a friend that I felt like I was getting my period. I ended up googling pregnancy signs and that was one of them. That was one of the last things that made me finally take the test. (I was never regular so being "late" was never a POAS sign)

  • OMG! Yay!!! :)

Definitely do some research on doctors if you don't have one! The one I used up until the pregnancy delivered only at a hospital that I did not like! So, I went looking for a new doctor who delivered at the hospital that I did like! So keep that in mind as well!

Because of your age, they may want you in earlier, but my first appointment was at 8 weeks along! Atleast if you call, you can get an appointment because OB's book up pretty quickly! :) Best of luck to you and a sticky baby!

    Yes

I'm sending you positive vibes for a sticky baby!  I know you're in a bit of shock now, but it'll grow on you once you get over the initial "OMG".  Congrats! :-)

And I would probably call the MD right away too, FWIW...

  • Thanks guys!!!

I knew I could count on you all.

We are going to make the call as soon as I get out of here.  I'm at a client's office all day today and tomorrow.  God knows I barely did 5 minutes worth of work today.  I can't focus at all.

So far, only my mum, one sister and you guys know :)

I think we have to break it to ILs tonight.  Chris can't keep his mouth shut for very long. hahaha
