Smelly Down There?

Hi...I have been married almost a year. My husband was my first and everything has been going well. Last night he said that he noticed that sometimes I am a little smelly down there...I wash with body wash then zest every morning...not sure what to do...

P.S. I have noticed thicker discharge than usual and small globs almost like buggers sometimes, but no pain or itching...

Re: Smelly Down There?

  • Sounds like it might be yeast. See a doc.
  • Yeah, it sounds like a yeast infection or maybe a fungal infection. Call your gyno!
  • But wouldn't that have other symptoms?
  • Sounds like bacterial vaginosis.  Using body wash/soap to wash yourself is probably what IS causing it.  I have stopped using any soaps, just water (just in that area, I use body wash for the rest of my body!), and do not use scented detergents or fabric softener to wash my underwear.  Also, lube can cause it if it is scented.

You should probably call your doctor.  Also, taking probiotics that are specific to women work well too.  I take Fem-dophilis and buy it on Amazon.

If you search for bacterial vaginosis you will be able to find what causes it and how to prevent it once you get rid of it.

    Not always.

    See your gyno.

and stop washing so much, it's actually not good to overwash (especially with perfumed soaps) You're body is pretty self cleaning, washing so much isn't really letting your body do it's job and could actually add to the bacteria...

Assuming your description of boogers means greenish/yellowish. Then yes, bacterial vaginosis. It could be a yeast infection. But if you have an odor I would go with bacterial vaginosis.

I agree that you are over washing that area. If you use anything it should be something unscented, perhaps Dove. I can't even use a scented body wash and the only body wash that somehow does not give me an infection is Philosophy, yes I know it's scented and that's what surprises me.

You need to see your GYN and you need to stop having intercourse until you seek treatment.

  • Generally, odor=bacterial vaginosis. It is actually more common than yeast. Many women assume they have yeast and go get OTC meds that don't work.

Contrary to the fact that BV smells "dirty", one of the factors that causes/makes it worse is trying to be TOO clean down there. Every doc and NP I have worked for says DO NOT EVER DOUCHE unless instructed specifically by your OB/GYN. YOur body will naturally cleanse you out wihout disrupting your PH or natural flora.

Antibacterial soaps are awful, because BV happens when you have an overgrowth of bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria. YOu are killing the good bacteria you need to keep away yeast and bad bacteria. Mild, non-scented, non-medicated, non-antibacterial soap or plain water should be all you need.

Go to the gyno. Metrogel is a great medication for BV(it is a clear, water-based, vaginal gel. It is the ph of what your vagina should be(to restore ph levels) and the medication goes directly where it needs to. You can also be prescribed oral antibiotics (usually Metronidazole).

All of this. You also cannot consume alcohol on Metrogel or the antibiotics as it causes projectile vomiting.

Actually, the metrogel drug rep always tells us that metrogel is a good choice because you don't have to give up having a drink. The oral metronidazole will cause severe sickness and vomiting with alcohol. He mentioned "you may have a patient who is too embarrassed to admit she can't lay off alcohol for a week while taking oral Metro. So this is a good product to prescribe" .

  • I tend to freshen up with the Always or Charmin wipes that are safe to use down there, I use one almost every night before i go to bed unless I jsut got out of the shower.  I wash all the time with regular body wash, but NEVER anti-bacterial kind.  But I agree with the PP's it doesnt hurt to have your dr check it out.
