RE: When to see an OBGYN + Recommendations
Those of you who are PG or have been, when did you start to see an OBGYN? I'm not the biggest fan of my primary, but she gets the job done. I have gone to Planned Parenthood since I was in college for everything else. Do you try to find an official OBGYN office before trying or once you have succeeded? I feel like such a newb.
And, while I'm asking and even though I know it has been asked before, does anyone have a recommendations for an office anywhere west of Portland (can include Portland, etc, but I don't really want to go all the way to Falmouth of any further south than maybe Biddo)?
Just trying to line up our ducks. ;-)

I didn't go to the OB until my first appt at 10 weeks (they did a u/s at 8 weeks)... I had a hard time chosing an OB/ hospital though (we have a ridiculous amount of options in MA).
ETA: I did go to my PCP for confirmation since it would be a few weeks until a real appt and wanted to re-review my meds to make sure I stopped all necessary ones.
I called my PCP first. They didn't even see me and said to go straight to an OB. I looked up OBs who delivered at the hospital I wanted to go to (SMMC) and that were included in my insurance. I ended up going to PrimeCare Women's Health in Biddeford and liked them a lot. There are several drs, but you can choose to just see one or rotate through to meet them all. They didn't see my for my first appt, which was only with the nurse, until 9 weeks. I think I had my first appt with the dr at 12 weeks.

So you found an OB first or was this after you were already testing as PG?
Oh yeah, that wasn't clear- sorry! I found out I was PG first, but it happened quickly for us. I have friends who have found an OB first and meet with them before they were PG.
I have what I think is a dumb question...
Is it less common here to have doctors be both OB and GYN? Back in NY, I had an OB/GYN (of course, I never needed the "OB") and was hoping to just find someone here who was both, so I wouldn't have to find someone else in addition once I was pregnant.
My Dr is both. I can either go to her or my PCP for my annual exams. I chose to go to her this year because I wanted to stay connected since I knew we would be ttc again soon, but once we're done having kids I'll probably stick with my PCP.
Hmm, seems like I'm the odd man out, but I established myself as a patient in the women's health office here in town about 6 months before we started TTC. I had myself thoroughly checked out to be sure I was healthy in that aspect, and checked all my medications and got advice on diet/exercise/vitamins/etc for the most successful conception.
I had never been to a separate OB/GYN, just a PCP, so I wanted to get a feel for the staff in the office before I was pg and really needed their care. Once I was pg, I was seen by the Midwives.

Coastal Women's delivers at MMC.
I love them. I went through hell and back during my pregnancy and they were great. I was already a patient there before I got pregnant. My PCP actually delivers and was bummed when he wasn't going to deliver Caroline, but with my history it was best to stick with the OB/GYN and deliver at MMC. If I didn't have an OB/GYN at the time, I would have probably gotten pregnant and called my PCP and asked them was to do after the fact. Normally, they don't see you for a while anyways after you get pregnant so you have time to get your ducks in a row.

I'm currently with Bowdoin Medical Group for my PCP, but, as I said, I'm not devoted to them and, therefore, would rather get feedback from you guys before deciding. But it sounds like I really don't have to decide until we need it. Just one more thing to give DH an answer to when he asks.
I actually went to the OB BEFORE I got pregnant. I wanted a preconception check up just to make sure things were A-Ok and talk to my DR about some questions/concerns I had. Plus it was nice knowing that once I got pregnant I didn't have to search for a DR. If something went wrong right away at least I knew I was already an established patient at a practive.
