What bike are you using for your Tri? I don't know if you remember but I just bought a really nice road bike and am riding it to work (~20 mi round trip) since I can't run still. I LOVE it - seriously - probably more than running. I've been thinking about joining in on some group rides around here and maybe doing some duathlons once I can run again but bike racing scares me because of wrecks. I mean, if I can ride on a 55 mph road and not be scared I shouldn't want to pee my pants in a bike race, right?

Re: **Melko**

  • ehh I have a hybrid bike, so nothing really tri worthy. DH got it for me for my birthday last year because I havent had a bike in so long.

Honestly, I'm scared to crap when it comes to biking. I actually started crying the last time I went out with DH. The traffic is just scary, and I'm not comfortable with shifting yet. My only biking goal right now is to become comfortable on it.

However, I'm really aching for a road bike. I know that once I'm comfortable on the bike, it will really open up my opportunities firtness-wise, and I'm really excited about it. It is really hilly around here though, which can help get me in shape, but it doesn't do so well with using my bike as transportation.

     have fun!

  • the first time I rode my bike it was to work one morning. I was so scared that once I got there I made DH come and pick me up that afternoon. I couldn't stand up or take a hand off of the handlebars without feeling like I was going to fall over. Mainly because the road bike is so light and skinny and I'm used to riding a chunky mountain bike. I've been doing it for a month now and can proudly say that I can keep up with traffic on side roads (~20 mph) and can hold my own on the big roads. Now that I can take a hand off of the handlebars I can actually signal turns lol.

You will get more comfortable - it comes with practice. It's really hilly around here, too, and once you get shifting down, the hills aren't as bad. My shifters are built into the brakes and it's a lot more intuitive than my old bike. It had the twist grip shifters and it was a pain because I had to move my hands off the handlebars. I've also found that the drop bars are most comfortable for me to ride - they feel more stable. Also, a really nice perk that my bike has is two sets of brakes. One is on the drop (which is the one with the shifters in it) and the other is on the flat bar, so if I want to slow down and ride up, I can brake still and not have to move my hands.

  • ohh that sounds nice. unfortunately, I think DH is on the list to get a new bike first, unless he starts making tons of money, and we can both get them. He has this horrible old road bike, and if he's going to continue doing big races like half iron mans, he needs a decent bike.

He actually dropped from 90/1100 to 350th because he got a flat last race. ugh.

  • lol yeah, my entire summers wages from my internship went to my bike :s Poor guy, that would suck so bad for something like a flat tire to make you drop so far behind.
