recommend your baby gates...

Yes, it's time for a baby gate.  I been trying to put weights on his legs to slow him down, but no luck.

I'm looking into a top of the stair permanent fixture and one that is move-able on the fly.

Tell me your thoughts.

Re: recommend your baby gates...

  • We have something like this

Not sure of the brand we have since it doesn't say it on the gate. We have it on the top and bottom of the stairs. There is no way DD is ever going to get the thing open, but it's so easy to use one handed which is nice when you are carrying a baby or a load of laundry, or both! For the stairs I wanted metal and permanent (well, semi, since we'll just patch the walls afterwards)

  • We have this gate, which we like... I think you can use it on stairs, it screws into the wall on one side and then swings and pressure secures to the other side... the only thing I have found is that it is difficult to get both points to connect and that may just be our house or my installation but it doesn't affect the effectiveness of the gate, it just makes it a little more wobbly at the bottom:

we had a pressure mounted swinging gate and I hated it... it was always getting messed up and people were stepping on it.  I got fed up with it and we got the new gate and it works so much better!  Plus the old gate had a weird button that you had to push in order to get it open and no one could figure it out... the new gate you just push and slide and it releases to open.

  • We have this Evenflo top of stair gate for the top of our stairs (obviously). I think it's a good gate. We did have to remove the baseboard on either side of where we mounted it. Of course DH managed to break the pieces when he took them off, so who knows if our stairs will ever look good again after we finally take down the gate. At this point, we just use the gate to keep DD out of the upstairs (the only rooms upstairs are our home office and bedroom).

We actually have an extra of that gate, new in the box. I bought two thinking we'd have one at the top and one at the bottom of the stairs, but when we took the first one out of the box, we realized that there was no way for us to install it at the bottom of the stairs because of where our handrail is mounted. I never got around to returning the extra gate. If you're interested in it, you can make me an offer. :)

  • We have this Regalo Easy Step Extra Wide Walk Through Gate our stair situation is a little different due to the wide stairs in our timber frame/open concept design and these work well. We have one at the top of the stairs (attached to the wall) and one at the bottom that is pressure mounted. I liked the way this one attaches to the wall- little cup things screw into the wall and the "feet" of the pressure mounted things go into the cups so that it can't slip out. That's a terrible description, but the point is it leaves very little damage on the wall.
