**MD girls**

we're going to our niece's birthday party in laurel on saturday afternoon and since we are renting a car, we want to make good use of it. we're thinking we'll head to college park ikea/target/etc... after the party. are there any good grocery stores nearby? non-chain restaurants?

TIA

  • There is a MOM (MOM's Oraganic Market) in College Park which I love.  It's on Rhode Island Avenue.

Yes, it's tiny (really tiny) but that is my go-to grocery store. You could also go a few ticks around the beltway and hit the new Wegmans.

There are very few good restaurant options in the area. The only ones we really go to are Mamma Lucia's and Hard Times. Both chains, but at least local chains. And Hard Times has really good beer on tap. There's also the New Deal Cafe in old Greenbelt.

Good luck shopping at Ikea on a Saturday!
  • There's a new Wegmans in Lanham - not too far from the Ikea (well, maybe it's far to go to a grocery store, but it's Wegmans.)  I would have lunch there!

It's probably about 20 min away but more if there's traffic. You have to go around 495, a few exits past the rt 50 exit.
  • Yes, the Wegman's is awesome. There's also a Costco in the same shopping center, if that interests you at all.

I think the only restaurants I've gone to around that area are Hard Times at the Ikea cafe.

  • RT Bently's in College Park is a decent non-chain place for American/pub food.  Just go early if it is Saturday night because it turns into a bar scene for the college kids.

I have no idea if this is still there, but near the College Park Metro used to be a place called 94th Aeorosquadron or something like that that had decent food and kind of a cool setup.

94th closed last year or the year before. Too bad because their beer cheese soup made it worth going to.

  • There's also Franklin's in Hyattsville that has great beer and pretty good food, plus is just a neat place.
