WWYD re: school

Started a 5 week class last night.  First class was in person, the remaining 4 sessions are online.

When I registered for the class the school schedule said (and still says) the class runs from 6/15-7/13.  My next class starts 7/20.  I booked a BWCA trip the weekend in between the two classes (was thinking- yay no homework for the trip!).

Last night was told by the teacher of the class that the last session for the class will START on 7/13 (the date the class is scheduled to end) and end on 7/19, with a large paper due on 7/19.

I approached him after class and asked about flexibility being as I will be without internet/computer access for 5 of the 7 days we're given for the last session due to being in the BWCA.  He basically told me tough luck, you chose to plan a trip, deal with it.

I've never had a teacher so unwilling to work around something like this before.  I wouldn't think anything of this if it was within the scheduled class period, but being as he extended the class by a week I feel like flexibility should be given.

Thoughts?  Not sure if this is normal for a BA program and I should just work with it or go to my program director...

  • Can you turn in the paper early? How badly do you need the class? Can you drop?

  • It's been a while since I was an undergrad but that was not normal for us (nor was it normal in law school).  If the semester ended on x date, that's when the semester ended and the prof couldn't just extend it willy nilly.

If the trip was planned during the advertised/scheduled class session, I would say to just deal with it.  But it sounds like there was either some sort of miscommunication between the school/prof/students or this guy is just being a jerk.  I would go to the program director or registrar's office to complain.

If it's not a class I had to take right now and there's still time, I'd probably drop it but I value my vacation time way more than being in school.

    Good luck.

  • Will you have the knowledge/materials to complete that final assignment prior to the official last day of class (before you leave for the BWCA), or will you not really be able to complete the assignment until AFTER class is officially done with (the week you'll be gone).  It doesn't seem right that he can just arbitrarily extend the course length beyond the official time period designated.  I can understand him not giving you MORE time (post BWCA) but the class should be designed in a way that you can complete the assignment prior to the official end of class and turn it in without being penalized for not including some materials that you didn't have access to until the very end...

Might be worth checking about this, and also checking with the office of registration, or some other student resources, to see whether what he's doing (extending the class beyond the official period) is legit, what your options are, etc.

  • This class is a required class for my program, so I'm not able to drop it.

I can complete the paper ahead of time and turn that in.  What I won't be able to do is fully participate in the online forums he has set up because he won't be posting the questions until the last day of class.  We then have 48 hours to post our initial response and then we have to follow up on our classmates responses over the weekend- this is what I would mainly miss out on.  I can probably get my initial posts up the evening of the 13th but the only day I will be able to respond to my classmates is the last day when everything's due.

Now that I'm typing everything out I feel a bit better about it and think it will be semi-manageable.  I'm just frustrated that the class schedule worked out this way.  Oh well, life goes on...

  • So I've decided to email my program director about the whole class ending date issue.  Does this read ok?  suggestions?

    Prof:

Just wondering what Bethel's policy is for the class end date?  Is it supposed to end on the advertised end date, or does the professor have the ability to extend the class?

I frequently book small trips for the week off between classes and last night I found out that the last week of my current online class starts on the end date.  I can work with this, but just wondered if this is standard policy?

    Thank you,

  • In my undergrad (at the U of MN) the class start and end dates were just for class instruction time.  "Finals" week was always the week after class ended, and it was normal to have a final exam the week after class ended and/or have a paper due during "finals" week.  So this really doesn't sound that out of norm to me.

Additionally, the schedule for exams/papers/finals was always communicated in the syllabus on the first day of class.  Now, if the Prof deviated from that initial communication later, I would take issue.

I agree with that.  We had scheduled class time and then finals week.  Does Bethel distinguish between the two?
