We *may* be looking into a newer vehicle for me as we have found a couple that are exactly what I have been looking for and they are very hard to come by. In fact, these are the first two that have everything I want that I have seen in the last year of looking! So, my question is, have you ever negotiated on a used car price? If so, how much did you low-ball to start off with. I've been doings lots of research online and it seems that starting off at 10-15% below asking is pretty standard, but I also don't want to insult the salesman! I know the average asking price, but obviously want to get as low as we can. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I have always been sucessful pointing out the things its missing and then offering a low price. I think the key is to always be super confident and know your stuff.
You wont offend the salesman. In a slow economy every offer will be looked at. Know what the NADA retail value of the car is before you go in because dealerships will sometimes price thier vehicles above retail to give them some bargainning room. And there is no reason to pay above or even at retail. Hopefully you could buy the car at trade value or halfway between trade and retail. If it is a high demand vehicle where inventory is limited you may have a hard time negotiating. Also if you have a trade try to negotiate best deal then mention that you have a trade. Sometimes buying a car near the end of a month can be helpful because the salesman and dealership all have quotas to hit and they want to push iron out the door. Good luck!!
ditto what everyone said. We bought our SUV for 28K and it was listed at 35K. I was extremely proud of myself for that. (they told me the very lowest they could go was 32k) I just stressed that we were firm on what we could afford and that he could have the vehicle sold in a second if he would lower the price. We also shopped competitors and told them that.
Just make sure you know your stuff, check out KBB and be firm on what you would/want to pay for the vehicle.
Sorry, I didn't fully read everyones post, but my mom used to work in a car dealership, and my family comes from a line of car people. I like to play hardball.
When going into the sale, do NOT think you're going to walk away that day with the car you want, salesmen know people want this and are willing to go after YOU if you don't buy the first day you're there. Most dealerships price off of Kelly Blue Book, KBB is ALWAYS high! ALWAYS, when you go to deal, use the NADA pricing.
When I bought my Jeep, they were asking $32k, I knew I could NOT afford that! SO I got them to take more for my trade in, (I traded in an '01 Blazer, for an '07Jeep) My blazer was pricing out at $4500, I got them to take $6500 for it plus $500 cash. SO I was able to get the price down to $25K, and I told them I did not want a certian %age. Also, if you tell them you want to use your own finacing, IE a credit union or your own bank, they might be willing to get you a better deal too on the loan!
OH! And lets say you found the car you want at another dealership, make sure to tell them that too! That always gets their juices flowing!!
When I bought my Jeep, we bounced back and forth between the bank and the dealer for financing! I probably could have done a little better on the price, but definitely got the finance rate much lower than it started out.
