Wanted: book and netflix reccs

I have 2 more weeks of no work and no driving.  Please recc. any books or dvd's, including shows on DVD.

Shows I Love but have watched:

Alias, the Brotherhood, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, Weeds, HIMYM, SATC, Veronica Mars, The Wire, Always Sunny, The Office.  I rented Lie to Me, but it didn't live up to my expectations.  I also didn't love Arrested Development as much as people thought I would.

Books:

Some of you are on my "Good Reads" list, but I tend to alternate between a light-read (chick-lit, comedy), a serious fiction (like an old classic, family drama), and a non-fiction relevant to SW or otherwise educational (current events, nutrition, money mngmt).  I don't care for sci-fi/fantasy, horror, or young adult.  I also am not really into historical fiction, unless it is phenomenal. I get bored easily and it has to keep my attention.

Re: Wanted: book and netflix reccs

  • Have you read the Hunger Games books?  If not, those are #1.

Then, Jen Lancaster's books (Bitter is the New Black is the first one, then her newest one is "If You Were Here").

Also, this may seem left field, but we've watched most of those shows and we're watching Friday Night Lights right now and it is seriously good.  We're also watching Big Bang Theory, and it is good, not great.

You also need to watch Fringe.

  • Also, on TV now: Franklin and Bash (bonus points for Zack Morris), and Drop Dead Diva starts Sunday (first 2 seasons are on Netflix).

Oh, and Man vs. Food is always a good way to kill a couple hours.

  • ditto Jen Lancaster as far as reads go.  Everything else I've read lately is foodie, but awesome: Anything by Ruth Reichl (Garlic and Sapphires was hilarious!), Anthony Bourdain (reading Medium Raw right now, love)

Shows... love Big Bang Theory (Mary, I'm going to pretend you didn't say that you didn't love it.  It's hilarious).  Did you watch Prison Break?  Good eye candy, good story for the first few seasons (and ridiculous enough thereafter to keep watching) and you could probably catch it on Netflix.  Same with House if you've never watched House.

Movies... When my mom had surgery last winter, she went thru the AFI's 100 greatest American films.  Most she could find on Netflix or at the library, of all places.  She got online and requested what she could from the library and sent my dad to pick them up.  Filled in any holes with Netflix.  Might be something fun to do, fun way to watch movies you may not ever pick on your own.  Here's the link:

I do like it- just on a scale of Babylon 5 to How I Met Your Mother it's something I wouldn't turn off but I wouldn't stop and watch every episode every time it is on TV.

I love Jen Lancaster.  I don't think I've read all of them, so I will add them to the list.  Sorry, I don't love Big Bang Theory.  Would I like FNL if I hate football?

I just read a foodie book you might like called Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, With Recipes.  It is well-written, and makes me want to go to paris even more.

I should go back and add some classic Audrey Hepburn movies.  I added some last year when I was doing the day zero list.

  • In my queue, we have:

     Modern Family

    Justified

    Royal Pains.

Another show I would recommend is White Collar.

Sort of off topic...  After looking through whats available instantly, I saw they have seasons 1 and 2 of Teen Mom... It's categorized as "Dark TV Shows" Hmm

I too adore The Hunger Games books, thought I've only read the first one to date.

Also, re: FNL -- Chris loved it and he is SO not a sports person, so something tells me you'll enjoy it regardless.

Probably.  It is about football, but it is really about the players and what each of them are going through, as well as the coach, one a couple of girlfriends, etc.

  • I'm currently watching Ally McBeal on netflix. I love watching old 90s dramas: Melrose Place, Party of Five, 90210, My So Called Life. I also watched The Kennedy's documentary on netflix. Other series I love: Sopranos, The Shield, Prison Break, Weeds, Dexter, Grey's Anatomy, Parenthood. I highly highly recommend Modern Family, if you're looking for a comedy. I can't think of any good movies I've watched lately.....21 grams, Limitless, but it was bootleg. haha

  • I do like Modern Family.  I just started watching it this season.  Maybe I'll get season 1.

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
