Anyone not have TV service?

DH and I are considering cutting our cable TV & DVR and just subscribing to Hulu plus ($8/month). It would save us about $35 a month. I explored hulu last night and you can set alerts for when new episodes of your favorite shows come out and have them added to your "queue" to watch. All of the shows he and I watch are on there.

We have "home theater PC" hooked up to our TV specifically so we can watch stuff easily. We would probably still get an antenna so we could get all the free channels (ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS) which would take care of sports (we only really watch football).

Is anyone else doing this?

Thoughts?

Re: Anyone not have TV service?

  • Until DH moved in I just used my antenna. Since he was unemployed at the time he wanted more choices and was used to it at his house. I have an office mate who just does netflix to save money. Sounds like a good plan but I have no real exerience with hulu.Just watched one or two things on there. They block hulu when you are outside the US.
  • I saw your post on MM (and my first thought was "hey, I "know" her!" lol).

DH and I have talked about doing this a few times; but have never gone through with it.  I'd say it's definitely worth a try.  If you don't like it, would you have to pay extra fees to get  your cable service back?

  • my BIL did this around the start of the year but instead of hulu I think he uses something from amazon...I couldn't say for sure though
"I said what I meant and I meant what I said, an elephant's faithful 100%" Dr. Seuss, Horton Hatches The Egg. My Ovulation Chart Ttc buddies with LexiMS!
  • We have been doing this since we moved in to our house (so over a year now), except we do netflix instead off hulu plus. We have really enjoyed it. We have our tv upstairs hooked up to a computer and use that to watch show on hulu (the regular one). Only thing we miss is Food Network and I occasionally miss TLC and WE.

hahaha the exact same thing happens to me when I see people from here on other boards. we wouldn't have to pay anything to get our cable back, we're not under any contract or anything now that we'd have to "cancel" either.

Thanks for the feedback ladies! I think we may just go for it, there's really nothing to loose I guess.

You know what I wish you could do, is to pick what channels you want to 'buy'.  For instance, have each channel cost a certain amount of money per month; the more channels you watch, the more you pay and so forth.  I only watch maybe 5 channels which consist of Fox, MTV, E!, TLC, and The Foot Network, then sometimes a few random channels here and there.  We're paying out the a$$ for hundreds of channels and never even look at them, but I don't want to give them up bc a lot of the shows I like aren't on Netflix and I hate watching shows on the computer...grrrr.

That's an awesome idea! Seriously! I've found 99% of the shows DH and I watch are available on hulu so we're just going to pay to get hulu plus which lets you see all the episodes (the free version you only get to see the most recent five). The only show I'm going to have to figure out a different way to watch is Real Housewives, but I'm pretty confident I can find it elsewhere online. Plus if I get un-addicted from that group of shows it's really not a major loss.

Xan, you are SO right!  You should propose that to all the cable and satellite companies out there!

  • We don't have tv service nor have we ever, we use netflix that way we can watch off the xbox, and still get new movies in the mail. they have most the tv shows we watch on the instant watch and for a little over $13.00 a month it's worth it.

But if the cable company's did a pick and choose service I'd have to say We would be getting cable tv.

We've not had cable since we moved back to Canada.  We get four channels--and one of them is in French--and we seem good enough with that.  Those channels are switching from analogue to digital in August, though, so we've got a converter box ready.  Anyway, when there is nothing on TV, we'll often switch on the computer and watch TV shows online from the broadcasters websites.  Our favourite is ctv.ca because they host some discovery channel shows, the comedy network, etc.
