Is this okay?

Me and H are thinking about going on a chicken and rice diet (eating chicken and rice, and some vegi every single night) Do you think this is healthy? Just having it for dinner should be fine right? Were working on losing weight and have been walking around 4 miles every day but haven't changed eating habits yet.

    I think that would be okay. Especially if you're eating other assortment of foods during the day to take in iron and other vitamins that would be missing. I can always double check with MH, he's a health freak...which you wouldn't guess since he's married to me.

    I think it'd be fine as long as you switched it up...for instance, don't only have brown rice or don't only have a certain veggie...you'd get sick of the same thing really fast.  There's a HUGE variety of things you can do with chicken that still keep it healthy and low calorie, and the same with different rice; however, watch out for boxed rice that heavily seasoned because those tends to have more calories in them than you'd believe since 'it's only rice'.

    When I was hard core dieting a couple years ago (sigh, need to get back into it) I would bake chicken breats with different seasoning/herbs/marinades then mix it with brown rice and veggies, then mix in some of whatever I cooked the chicken with.  It was essentially the same meal every night but always had a different flavor due to the spices I used.

  • I suspect it's probably fine nutrition-wise. However, I also suspect that having the same meal every night will get really boring, and I know I'd be more likely to cheat in that instance.

    I'd suggest weekly meal planning instead - you can check the calorie counts for recipes online, and buy the ingredients in advance. Then you won't get bored by the same meal every night.

    This.  But if you're still onto the chicken and rice thing, I'd also make sure that you have more veggies on your plate than rice. Good luck!

  • My BF sees a trainer/body builder and all he ate was chicken, brown rice and broccoli. He would make a big pot of it in the morning and take it to eat all day. Blech! I would be so bored with the same thing EVERY day!

    I agree with Xan, just marinade or season it differently so you don't get bored.

  • I'm sure it's fine, especially if you switch up marinades, spices, veggies and use brown rice like the ladies suggested...but I also have to ask; what are your other meals and snacks like?

    Eating a healthy dinner is a great start; but you may need to look at the other food and drinks you have during the day and tweak those too.

    This may make me unpopular, and please don't think I'm flaming but, here's the thing about dieting - it's temporary (unless you plan on dieting for the rest of your life). What are you going to eat when the diet is over? If you go back to what you're doing now you're just going to gain everything back.

    I'd suggest making lifestyle changes, rather than dieting. Starting with a weekly meal plan is a great way to start a lifestyle change. Once you get comfortable with that you can move onto something else. I tried dieting and had no success. But with small lifestyle changes over time, I have lost more weight and become more fit than ever - and it takes little effort to keep it up because they aren't temporary big changes, they're small tweaks that I've done over time and gotten used to. They're tweaks that I can apply all the time - whether I'm traveling, eating at a restaurant, eating at a cook out, etc.
