Getting Rid of Smoke Smell

DH's parents very graciously gave us some furniture (bed, dresser, nightstand) for our spare room.  The only problem is that they both smoke, and all the furniture reeks of it!  We've tried Febreeze, and it helped some, but mostly it just smells like we tried spraying Febreeze to cover the smoke smell.  Is there any way to get rid of this smell?

Re: Getting Rid of Smoke Smell

  •   Wipe it down using a mild soap and water if it was something that would stand up to water (or some other cleaner made for wood) - there is probably smoke residue on it. Let it sit out in the sun for a while. Or sand it down and refinish it.

  • We received a piece of furniture from my Grandmother, and had the same problem.  We wiped it down with Murphy's soap, and it helped.  We did it several times over a few months, though.

    Good luck!

  • I would also suggest putting a small container of baking soda in each of the drawers. DH bought a desk off craigslist that had been owned by a smoker for his office at work and that seemed to help a lot!! (It also helps that we didn't have to sleep on it though!) GL!

  • I always recognize TSP (trisodium phosphate), you can get it at Lowes or Home Depot. It's a grease cutter and super cleaner. Our last house was owned by heavy smokers and had a thick layer of tar over the walls. We used a TSP solution to wash down the walls and everything to get the smell out.

  • All of the above, plus SUN.  Leave it in the sun for a few days.  Take drawers out.  I also rotate directions during the day to maximize the sun.  Bring it in at night incase of rodents or rain.

    Good Luck
