Moms with crawlers/walkers

What type/brand of baby gates do you have? I know I'm totally thinking ahead here, but I have some coupons and gc to BRU, so I was considering getting one (or more). I just started researching them, so I was curious to see what your experiences were. Thanks!

Re: Moms with crawlers/walkers

  • we had bought 2 cheap gates from wal-mart when Remi was a puppy. They have the wooden frame and plastic on the inside (best description I can give lol) and they did just fine! They can be a pain to climb over but they get the job done! We really didn't use them all that much, actually we used them more for the dog than we did with ERP. We only have one step in our house and it goes up into the kitchen and by the time we moved here she was old enough (12mo) to master that step in less than 3 days! and it's a 10ft opening so there was no gate that would block it!

Not sure if this helped in anyway but that's all I got :)

  • We have 1 area where we needed a permanent gate. That is the door going to our kitchen. Mostly b/c Maggie likes to go in the kitchen and eat the dog food or tip over his water. So for that area we have this gate. It can either be mounted with screws or used as a pressure gate. We use it as a pressure gate. I really like it.

For our living room, we have 2 gates we use that we originally bought when Copper was a puppy. We only use those if we need to contain Mags to one area. This is is similar to the gate we use there.

Aside from the one in the kitchen, we let her roam a lot b/c we don't have stairs. She usually just plays with her toys, but she likes her independence of being able to go in different rooms.

  • Thanks so much! I'll def need 2, because I have stairs, and I'm realizing a lot of these gates aren't made to mount to a wall and banister. Looks like this is going to be a fun search lol glad I started early.

  • We have this one:

We LOVE it!  We like that the door doesn't close automatically.  It screws to wall which is nice too.  It might not work for you depending on how big of doorway you have.

They do make gates that can mount to banisters.

Our living room is at the top of the stairs so we needed a good gate.  Problem was that we have a banister on both sides at the top of the stairs which no gates will mount to.  So, DH got creative and this is what we have.

He painted two pieces of wood black to match  and mounted them to the bannister using U-brackets, and then mounted the gate to the wood.  Here's a better picture of the U-brackets:

  • Go to Petsmart-we got our gate there for 30 bucks, and you can use it on a banister. Kind of like this:

    but MUCH cheaper.

I like it because you don't have to step over anything. And you can leave it open. We have a gate because my dog has decided counter surfing should be a new sport. Stick out tongue

  • We have 2 of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EICY8E

I love that it swings shut, it's nice and tall, and really sturdy. It does have the option of being screwed in, or you can use the sticky pads and attach to the wall sans screws. Plus, it looks pretty nice in our older home.

I NEVER would have even thought of that! Great idea. I hope I can find one that doesn't cost $80!! lol

  • I only have one set of stairs in the house and it has a locking door so I am lucky enough to not need baby gates. What my kid needs is a helmet
