Re: The Friday Five
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not?
No, sadly. I had plans to live abroad for a semester in college, when I was still in school, but since I never finished, I was never able to take advantage of that opportunity. Then I wanted to teach English in Japan for a year once I did receive my degree while I was in MD, but then all that went to hell, I moved home, and here I am, still here.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd?
The first vinyl record I ever owned that I remember being mine was the Cocktail sountrack single, with Kokomo on one side, and Don't Worry Be Happy on the other. The first tape I think I ever actually purchased on my own was Green Day's Dookie. I had copies of tapes and stuff that I recorded off the radio, but I remember specifically buying that one. And my first CD was Mariah Carey's Music Box
3. what do you think of your parents?
My parents and I have a much stronger relationship now than we did when I was growing up. Growing up we fought just about every day - they were very much of the mentailty "my house, my rules" even after high school, and it grated on my very being, and I think that was also part of the reason why I couldn't wait to move down to Maryland. Now that I've been on my own, and have lived my own life, we have a better understanding of each other and get along much, much better. I have also gone to the extent of thanking my parents for how they raised me, because I've seen how people turn out without discipline, and I'm grateful for the life lessons they have taught me.
4. what is your relationship with your hair?
I hate it. But I'm working on making it better, thanks to Sephora's StaightMaking shampoo system and Sarge's Wet2Straight iron, but it's a work in progress, especially since I have no time or patience. Still thinking about a Keratin treatment, so I'm keeping my eyes out for a good Groupon to come along...
5. what kind of pens do you like?
Blue ballpoint ones with a smooth rollerball that doesn't leak or smudge. There's a Papermate one I use a work with a nice rubber grip that I absolutely love.

1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? No, I haven't. The opportunity just didn't come up.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd? The only one I really remember is my first CD, which was Ace of Base. My mom did let me buy cassettes from Columbia House (you know, where you entered the sweepstakes to win millions of dollars and all you had to do was buy cassettes?) from time to time.
3. what do you think of your parents? My dad is awesome. He's tied in first place with DH for my favorite guy on the planet. My mom.. well, I miss her. And I miss who she was when I was growing up.
4. what is your relationship with your hair? Currently, I love my hair. Love, love, love. I've been forbidden by multiple friends and coworkers to change my hair style.
5. what kind of pens do you like? Pens are one of my favorite things, ever. Currently I am obsessed with this stainless steel pen made by Zebra. It writes beautifully, even if you're writing on something on a wall or whatever... the ink never stops flowing. My coworker got me hooked on them and I think I have about 4 of them lying around.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? No, but I wish.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd? Thriller - on vinyl. Would play it non-stop.
3. what do you think of your parents? Hmm, that's a loaded question. I love them, but let's say if/when I have children there is a lot I would do differently.
4. what is your relationship with your hair? Love/hate. I am not so great at styling other than straightening. Since I have been injured and can't really use the blowdryer, I have been scrunching and wearing it wavy/curly. Should have done that years ago.
5. what kind of pens do you like?
Black ink, gel pens. Hate ball point pens.
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? Nope, the most we did was move alot, MA to FL to MA and a million towns in between. Mostly because my dad was a loser.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd? I used to listen to my mom's, but I remember one of the first ones I bought myself was TLC - Crazy, Sexy, Cool
3. what do you think of your parents? My mom is pretty much my best friend I would not have made it through anything with out her. She doesn't judge, and will give her advice, but understand if I don't use it. My stepdad - things are waaay better since I moved about 6, almost 7 years ago. I can't bring myself to call him Dad, but he knows he's a father figure to me. My BioDad - was a deadbeat, alchy. He left on my 10th birthday for a 'business' meeting and never came back. He would call every so often but I couldn't talk to him because I'd be crying too hard. He was abusive, and just a horrible person, but I can't help and think about him alot. And how things could have been. He passed away a few years ago, I have no idea how, but all I know, is he found it his mission to repopulate the earth and I now have sisters I have never met
4. what is your relationship with your hair? Very love hate, It's so thick that I don't do much with it, but when I do it takes forever. But I get compliments on the color all the time (natural red head)
5. what kind of pens do you like? ballpoint black
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not?
No, I haven't. The opportunity just didn't come up.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd?
My first cassette was Raffi. Then I got the Little Mermaid soundtrack. Oh, and I had NKOTB tapes. My first CD was also Mariah Carey Music Box. The first album I bought on iTunes was 50 Cent.
3. what do you think of your parents?
My mom means well. She tries really hard, but it is difficult to get along with someone who never leaves you alone and critiques everything about your life. My step mom is awesome, and not as clingy, I just wish my mom appreciated her relationship more.
4. what is your relationship with your hair?
I love my hair. My style right now is fun and trendy, but nothing I'd keep forever.
5. what kind of pens do you like?
I like the colored Sharpie pens, ultra fine tipped Bic Mark Its and Uniball Signos. I prefer them in various colors of blue due to my legal training.
Stand up for something you believe in.
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? No, I had wanted to go to my University's Rome Center when I was in college but by the time I was ready to go it would have made have to graduate a semester later and I was not interested in that. Other than that, I like America.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd? my first record(that I remember) was Madonna's "Lucky Star"/my first tape was Michael Jackson's BAD that I stole from my mom/my first cd was "Spice Girls" :shutter:
3. what do you think of your parents? My mom is the best person I know and I want to be her when I grow up. She and I are very close since my parents are divorced and I lived with her my whole life. My stepdad is amazing and also a pain in the arse; he pisses me off sometimes with his crazy ways but he has definitely made me a stronger person. My dad and my stepmom...I love them both very much but they make a lot of decisions that I do not agree with. As I've gotten older I realize how much I disagree with their choices, especially in the route they've taken raising my brother and sister. But it is their right to make those decisions so I bite my tongue since it's not my place. They are definitly the "fun" parents though and I love spending time with them and miss them more than I ever thought i would since they moved to FL a year ago.
4. what is your relationship with your hair? I love my hair. I think it's really versatile and is relatively cooperative with whatever I want it to do. The only thing I dislike is how frizzy it gets in the humidity but that's what hair products are for, right?
5. what kind of pens do you like? black, BIC, that has the kind of frosted body/cap...not the white body with the black cap.

1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? No, not yet. I'm pretty close to the Canadian border though, so we'll see how things go in November 2012
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd? Oh man, I have no idea. I know we have the Thriller and one of Cyndi Lauper's albums on vinyl (like they were specifically for me and my sister). I think the first CD I personally bought was Boyz II Men.
3. what do you think of your parents? I have very differnt feelings for them from the past year since they decided to get divorced, then I did growing up. My Dad is great (I've always had a really good relationship with him), he's taking my Mom leaving him in stride, he's actually already met someone who's super nice so I'm really happy for him. He also still calls all the time and is interested in my life. My mom on the other hand...we've always butted heads, but now I have a lot of anger and resentment for her. This whole midlife crisis she's going through also includes forgetting she has children, so she rarely calls and when she does its like for 5 minutes and the "well, I gotta go because whatever else I'm doing in my life is more important." (seriously, she was supposed to come up for a week when Phoenix was born and she cut it to 3 days because she wanted to go on a trip with her new boyfriend who she's not even with anymore...so ya...)
4. what is your relationship with your hair? I've pretty much always hated my hair. Its thin, and frizzy, and a combination of straight, wavy, and curly, so its completely unmanageable. It was pretty nice when I grew it out because I could straighten it, and then I did rock the pixi cut, but now that I'm growing it out again...I look like Justin Beiber with a fem mullet...NOT the look I was going for here.
5. what kind of pens do you like? I'm partial to felt tip pens myself. Also, I had this left handed gel pen, it was marvelous! The ink dried really quick which is why it was a lefty pen.
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? No, the opportunity never presented itself. Wish it had.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd? Cassette tape- Michael Jackson Black or White: CD- TLC Crazy, Sexy, Cool
3. what do you think of your parents? My mom and stepdad are fantastic. The older I get the more I realize how much I lucked out in the parents department. They were pretty perfect parents. I've never had much of a relationship with my biological dad. He's always been distant and honestly he just doesn't really care. He doesn't call. It disappoints me, but over time you just stop caring so much.
4. what is your relationship with your hair? I love the color and the fact that it's straight and pretty low-maintenance. Every hair product I have says volumizing. I wish I hadn't cut it quite so short a few weeks ago, but it grows really fast so hopefully in a few months I'll like the length a little better.
5. what kind of pens do you like? At work, we have to sign things in blue ink, so you can tell the copies from the originals. So, I always use blue ink. I like ballpoints better, but not the sharpie kind that smear.
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? no, and I wish I had, I think it's a good experience. My friend did her MA in England, I think that's a great idea, a year is a good amount of time to go away.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd?kris kross lol
3. what do you think of your parents? my mom gets on my nerves and sometimes her general attitude is very irritating, but most of the time we get along. my dad's great.
4. what is your relationship with your hair? i like the color. i wish it would curl/wave in the way i want it to, not in the way it wants to. we argue a lot, especially in the summer.
5. what kind of pens do you like?pilot precise rolling ball. i have terrible handwriting and there are many pens i really can't write with because of the way i hold them. i've been using these pens primarily since 1994. my favorite pen color is purple or turquoise- i like to be a little different
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not? - Negative. But, I don't know if I would like living in another country. I would love to visit but I don't know if I'd want to move.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd? - Amy Grant's "Heart In Motion" (ETA: my parents were very strict about what we listened to, and we weren't supposed to have anything non-christian in the house, but I got away with this one since Amy Grant was originally a Christian artist.)
3. what do you think of your parents? - Ahem. I'm going to pass.
4. what is your relationship with your hair? - Some days good, some days bad.
5. what kind of pens do you like? - Black ones. I recently stole a Florida Orange Juice pen from IHOP that I really like.
1. have you ever really lived outside the country of your birth? why or why not?
Argentina for a month. I was studying abroad.
2. what was your first record/cassette tape/cd?
Ummm...first cassette was Spice Girls, I think, and first CD was either Barenaked Ladies or TLC, I can't remember.
3. what do you think of your parents?
My mom is my BFF. I don't speak to my bio dad. My step dad is pretty cool.
4. what is your relationship with your hair?
Generally I like it. Right now I'm growing it out, and it's at an awkward length, so I don't currently love it as much as I usually do.
5. what kind of pens do you like?
Sarasa gel pens, .7 in black or colors. I hate blue ink.
