XP from Pets--our cat has diabetes :(

Thought I would X-post this here since I know so many of you ladies have experience with cats and might be able to offer some advice.  Plus maybe it will get the board moving :)

Our cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. Tonight we're going back to the vet to learn how to care for her and how to give insulin, etc.  Does anyone have any experience with a diabetic cat?  Advice?  Sites they recommend?

One thing, they recommended a prescription Purina diet, which my gut tells me not to do, but to research what quality food can work with diabetes. Currently we feed Innova dry and Merrick wet.

TIA!

Re: XP from Pets--our cat has diabetes :(

  • No specific experience, but my grandmothers cat-who she loved dearly-lived with diabetes for years, with a modified diet and insulin shots.  We also had a cat with kidney failure that we had to give fluids through an IV needle in her back, and she lived for another good 3 years before we had to put her down.  GL!

  • Aw, I'm sorry! I don't have any experience with this but hopefully someone will have good advice for you.
  • Thanks Cooper & Gracie for the thoughts.  I am hoping someone has some advice.  We are hoping that she'll be able to adjust to this and live a good life - she's only about 10 years at the most.
  • Good luck and I'm sorry to hear about your cat. I have no advice.

  • I worked at a vet through high school. It was a small town vet and we didn't encounter things like this very often. Of the few cases I do remember, the Dr. did recommend food changes, but he recommended Science Diet. I would definitely do some research on foods before deciding for sure. I'm sorry to hear this. GL!
  • aw, I am sorry. I have never had a diabetic cat, but I know they can live a long time. Hugs to your kitty!

  • My cat was diagnosed with diabetes in November. It's been up and down and very expensive to regulate. However, now that he's regulated, he's better. We've had problems with his back legs giving out (nerve problems from the diabetes) and an unhealthy coat of fur that needs prescription shampoo and good grooming.

Scoutie gets 2 units of Lantus insulin twice a day after he eats. It's really easy to inject him, I've taught friends how to do it when we're out of town. He originally started on 1 unit, but was doing poorly about a month ago and needed to have it upped.

Be aware...it's expensive. I went through sticker shock. Lantus is $130, but the bottle lasts about 6 months. We only went through half the bottle in six months, but it deteriorates and needs to be replaced. The needs are about $25 for 100 or so.

We don't feed him a prescription diet. Our vet didn't even suggest it. She did give us a list of protein-rich wet food that we should feed him (he is also chronically dehydrated), and it included certain varieties of fancy feast. We also let him eat regular dry cat food, just because we have another cat and it's impossible to keep their dry food separate. He does just fine.

Aw, I am sorry about your kitty.  That's good to know about the food. I've actually found a good message board in the meantime for feline diabetes.

They recommended getting cartridges of insulin vs the vials because they last longer.  Not sure if the prescription you have is available in cartridges or if you knew about that.
