Poll: Commuting

Because I'm curious:

1)  How long is your commute?

2)  How do you get to and from work?

3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job?

4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live?

Re: Poll: Commuting

  • 1)  How long is your commute?  Roughly 30 minutes door to door

    2)  How do you get to and from work?  Subway

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job?  Not really.  I live in the city and work in the central business district.  If the job had been located in the suburbs, it may have been a factor though.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live?  Not really.  My commute to work was roughly the same from the neighborhood I lived in prior to where I live now.

  • 1)  How long is your commute? 30-40 minutes

    2)  How do you get to and from work? DH drives me, his work is about 5 minutes from mine.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Yes

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? No, I rather pick where I live and have a longer commute or a different job then have to worry about living by where I work.

  • 1)  How long is your commute? 30 minutes total - I have a 20 minute drive and a 10 minute walk

    2)  How do you get to and from work? I drive. There is no form of public transportation between the town that I live in and the town that I work in.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Not really, but I did ask about how bad parking would be. Parking is terrible when working on campus but it is something that you learn to deal with.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? Yes and no. I knew that I wanted to live close to the town that I work in, but I didn't need to live in the same town.

    1)  How long is your commute? 30-60 minutes, depending on traffic and whether or not I can use the commuter lane.

    2)  How do you get to and from work? Drive/car pool

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? It wasn't for this job, but probably would be in the future.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? First house?  Not so much, but a bit.  The commute isn't too bad for me, especially since I can carpool, but it's twice as long (aka dealthy long) for Derek.  Our next house will be closer for him, and probably "counter commuting" for me.

  • 1)  How long is your commute?

    About 45 minutes

    2)  How do you get to and from work?

Public transit - half the trip is on the streetcar and half on the subway

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job?

At the time, I lived within 20 mins walking distance so that was very attractive.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live?

Yes, definitely. Our parents all suggested moving close to them to get more house for our money, but we couldn't bear the thought of commuting that far. Transit accessibility and commuting time were huge considerations.

    Because I'm curious:

    1)  How long is your commute?

1 minute or less. I live and work in the same building. I walk down 5 flights of steps and 20ft to my office back door.

    2)  How do you get to and from work? I walk

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? No. When I first got this job. I drove 2+ hours each day depending on traffic. I then moved and drove around 1+ hour each way.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? It was more about the area that we wanted to live in. We wanted to live in the interesting and fun part of the city. Dh's next job hopefully will be in the city. He currently does a reverse commute out 30 minutes each way.

  • 1) Going in the morning, Jim drops me at the train.  Door to door, it's about 45 minutes.  Going home in the evening, it's train and then bus; that trip is about an hour and 10 minutes.  If I drive, it's an hour.

    2)  Oops, I answered in number one.  Lately, I've been taking the train in and either catching a ride home with my MIL or taking the car from Jim in the evening.

    3) Not really, that kind of commute is pretty standard for D.C.

    4) I did consider the commute when deciding where to live.  I definitely wanted to be close to public transit.  My first apartment and Jim's condo were right on the bus line.  Now I have to walk a couple of blocks to the bus, but it's still close enough.

    1. 45-60 minutes

    2. Car, DH and I carpool twice a week and then he works from home

    3. No, we have moved since

    4. No, we fell in love with the house and decided we could make it work.

  • 1)  How long is your commute? about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. it's exactly 25 miles from my house to work. 2)  How do you get to and from work? I drive, or Sean drives. we've been carpooling when we're on the same schedules. sometimes we have things to do after work though, so it doesn't always match up. 3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? hmm... when I first started working for my dad's company, it was run out of our house. I literally woke up and was at work. so that's a no. 4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? I guess somewhat... I wouldn't want a much longer commute than I have now. but I don't think commute ranks high on the priority list as much as school systems and general area.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? No, we had our jobs here first

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? Yes, we wanted to have less than an hour commute.

  • 1)  How long is your commute?

My work is only about 8 miles from my house but I have to go out of my way about 15 miles to daycare for P. Jordans school is about 2 miles so it is not bad at all in my opinion. I spend about 20 minutes in the car each morning.

    2)  How do you get to and from work?

    I drive.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job?

    Yes for sure.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live?

No we already had our place when I took this job, and we do not want to move out of this community. I live in small town and the closes big town (jackson, mississippi) is about 45 miles north. Most people have to drive there for work. Traffic is horrible and plus gas is expensive. We don't have any taxi's or public transportation around so there would be no way to get around it. I feel very lucky me and DH both work in our town.

  • 1)  How long is your commute? About 10mins to my new school

    2)  How do you get to and from work? I drive, there's not another very convenient way to get there.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Yes, I only I applied to South Side schools because driving across the city at those times of days are nightmares

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? No, Sean already owned the house when I moved in. So our house determined where I applied.

  • 1)  How long is your commute? 25-50 minutes 2)  How do you get to and from work? Bus 3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Yes. We had already bought our house, so I limited my search. 4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? I was unemployed when we bought the house. We factored in DH?s commute, which is about an hour, but he was transferred here for that job and it?s in an industrial area that we would never even consider living.

  • 1)  How long is your commute?  30 mins door to door.

    2)  How do you get to and from work? The T (subway).

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Not really - most law jobs available around here are in the city anyway and I already live here, so it's not a big deal.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? Absolutely.  I refuse to live somewhere that's more than a 5 minute walk from a T station.  If we ever move to the suburbs, it's going to be a very big adjustment for me.

  • Because I'm curious:

    1)  How long is your commute? Depending on traffic, it is anywhere from 25-25 minutes.

    2)  How do you get to and from work? My big bad minvan.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Somewhat, Portland is the farthest I will travel. (which I work here in Portland)

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? Not at all.

  • 1) How long is your commute? 30 minutes, except on Fridays when it bumps up to 40-45 minutes

    2) How do you get to and from work? Drive

    3) Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Not really...I don't plan on staying here for more than 5 years, and when I do leave it would only be for a district that is closer to our house

    4) Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? More for DH than me...he takes public transportation to work, and he doesn't have a car, so we needed to be within walking distance of a trolley/train/bus. He walks to the trolley stop in the morning, and I pick him up from the train after work

  • 1)  How long is your commute? Right now it's an hour and 20 minutes. About to go down to 40.

    2)  How do you get to and from work? I walk a mile (or take the bus if the weather is bad) to the Metro, then use that to get to my office.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job? Nope, not at all.

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? No; when I first moved here, H was already living in MD. My current job is in VA, but the commute mattered less to me because I wanted to live near H. When we moved in together, we found a two-bedroom apt. where H had been renting (we love it there); it didn't even cross my mind to look for a place closer to work.

Yep! Some details are in the Happy Friday thread. FWIW, you reminding me that this was a dream job helped clarify my thought process. Smile

  • 1)  How long is your commute? 8 miles one way

    2)  How do you get to and from work?  Driving usually, or sometimes on my bicycle.  I carpool with DH sometimes since he works a block away.

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job?  In a way.  I moved here in a corporate merger, and turned down moving to Houston because I refuse to spend my life in the car.  This town isn't that big, so there aren't really any awful commutes (unless I worked in Denver).

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live? Yes.  See #3.  I grew up in Los Angeles, and will never spend that much time in the car again.

  • 1)  How long is your commute?  Depends on which hospital...

    Large hospital - 15-20 minutes

    Small hospital - 35-40 minutes

    2)  How do you get to and from work?  Drive.  If DH is working and I'm at the small hospital, we will carpool since he teaches in that town

    3)  Is the commute a factor you considered when accepting your job?   Yes (but I didn't know I would be getting shipped out to the smaller hospital).  My previous position had a 30-35min commute on a major highway

    4)  Is the commute a factor you considered when deciding where to live?  For sure.  There is a smaller town close to us with nice houses, but we wouldn't look too far into that town since it would add 15-20mins to our commute to the smaller hospital
