When is it gonna happen????
I have been following the "Babywise" book routine of "eat, wake, sleep." According to the book, 75% of babies on that routine are sleeping through the night by 8 weeks. James is 12 weeks and he still wakes up once a night to eat. He eats/goes to bed between 8:00 - 8:30, wakes up around 1:30 to eat, then wakes up again between 5:00 and 6:00 (but doesn't eat until 7; not a fan of him waking up at 5 some mornings, but that was my schedule when i was pregnant, and the alarm goes off at 5:30 for DH anyway, so it's not that big of a deal). I used to feed him around 10:00, hoping he would sleep later, but he would wake up around 2:00 AM to eat. I then noticed that he was falling asleep around 8:00 every night, and we were waking him up at 10:00 to eat and go to bed. I've noticed that feeding/putting him down around 8:00, when he likes to fall asleep, works best because he is not disturbed from the "deep sleep."
His pediatrician said not to worry about his sleep yet, and said most babies don't sleep through the night until they are between 4-6 months. I know James is capable of going 6-7 hours without food (he's on a 4 hr feeding schedule during the day and goes 5-6 hours at night), but I'm not sure if I should be letting him cry it out now, or give him more time since the pediatrician said not to worry about it yet. I also wonder if starting solids next month will help with that too?
Any thoughts, advice, etc? When did your babies start STTN? (there's also the big question as to how long that is. i've heard that STTN is sleeping for a 5-6 hr stretch, and others say that STTN is sleeping the whole time that you want to sleep)
Re: Moms - sleeping through the night?
Hah, Lucie still hasn't figured it out. She'll sleep through one night and not the next. I've actually heard that the average age is over a year, so don't worry about it, though I know it sucks for you. Seriously - she'll trick me one night and the next she's up at 3 or 4. And yes, STTN is technically 5-6 hours. Some mom's will say their babies sleep through the night but they go like 12-6. Lucie goes 8-7 when she does do it so I guess 8-3 is still technically STTN.
In L's case, she is NOT hungry. Just wants attention. I've tried letting her cry but it's hard to do in the middle of the night when I'm tired and when I worry what the neighbors will think. I know she's capable of it so I think I'm going to have to cave soon.
Don't worry over it, 3 months is still very young and James is probably still hungry when he wakes up. I think if you have a 3 month baby and he/she is sleeping through the night then you are a very lucky parent!
I was already back at work (4 months old) and Emmy was still getting up at night at least once, sometimes twice to eat. It wasn't for a bit longer that she would go through the night. But my child is strange, she doesnt really nap during the day and is in bed each night by 6 pm. And she will now sleep until around 5/6am. She does still wake up in the middle of the night but I let her cry. It maybe lasts for <5 minutes and she is out again. She is restless sleeper like I am, so she does wake herself up.
I didnt start letting her cry until she was about 9 months old after my doc had said that we should probably start putting her down awake since we were rocking her to sleep before we put her down. Thankfully it only took a couple nights and she went down relatively quickly (<5 or 10 minutes of fussing) With this one will definitely put her down awake from the beginning so she gets used to it right away.
IMO STTN at 3 months is too soon. I think the 6+ month mark is more appropriate. But every baby is different. He will let you know when he is hungry. I was never a fan of scheduled feedings. When Em wanted to eat, I would feed her. If it was every hour (like it was in the beginning) or every 6 hours, so be it. I tried to do the same things each night, so she got used to the routine, but if she wasn't feeling it one night, oh well.
Hang in there. I know it feels like it will never end, but I honestly can't remember being up all night/every night. I guess my momma brain has been programmed well to forget all that!

L started STTN (11-6) at 10 weeks, but it wasn't every night - probably 3 out of 5 nights. By 12 weeks it was nearly every night. That stopped when he was about 5 months though, and has just recently come back. Now it's 8:30 to 6.
Stanton started STTN (10:30 or 11 to 5 or 5:30) around 4 months. Now he's 5 months, and he goes to bed awake about 7:30 or 8, goes to sleep within minutes, and sleeps until 5:30 or 6.
I think my kids are more the exception than the rule though. We just like to sleep in my family. lol
