What are the best books you've read lately? What are you currently reading? Planning to read next?
Re: What are you reading?
I recently finished "The Lost Dogs" about the Michael Vick dogs, which was really good. I feel a lot more informed after reading it.
Before that I read "Inconceivable" by Carolyn Savage. I tried reading "Cinderella Ate My Daughter" but was really not interested.
And I'm currently reading "The Notebook". I think it's the only Nicholas Sparks book I haven't read (but saw the movie a million times) so when I saw it at the library I picked it up.
Oh and I also just read "A Million Little Pieces"- I guess I'm catching up on popular books that were famous five years ago?
On my list is Tina Fey's "Bossypants" and "The Art of Racing in the Rain"
Holiday Card 2011
The Baloney Bug, A Blog
The last two books I read were Bossypants by Tina Fey and Runaway by Meg Cabot. The first was amusing, though it's not a book I'd want to own. The second is a totally stupid book, but it was part of a series that I wanted to finish. It took 90 minutes to read and I'm glad I knew the next piece in the story, even if it is a completely ridiculous plot.
I'm currently reading A Soft Place to Land by Susan Rebecca White and I'm not very far into it yet, but it hasn't grabbed me. I'm going to sneak in some reading during lunchtime today and see if it gets better. It's had mixed reviews on GoodReads, so I don't have high hopes.
I have Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares on my nightstand and I'm dying to get into that, but I hate reading more than one book at a time. This is the latest (and presumably last) of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and catches up with the characters as adults. Apparently the NY Times and B&N posted huge spoilers before the book was even released, so I'm avoiding Googling the book at all.
The next two to read after that are The Red Queen, Philippa Gregory's latest in her Plantaganets series, and For a Few Demons More, #5 in the Rachel Morgan/The Hollows series by Kim Harrison. I expect each will take me awhile to read, which sucks because I have a huge list of To Reads that I'm excited to request and get from the library.

I think I generally have different preferences when it comes to reading than most on here, I do like my chick lit, but I'm more of a suspense/spy thriller/action reader. I just finished American Assassin by Vince Flynn (I've read all his books) and loved it. I also like all of Daniel Silva's books, David Baldacci, and Brad Metlzer books.
I read a Jodi Picoult (sp?) book recently and it was ok, my MIL also gave me The Mermaid Chair, which was also ok.
I can't get into Jodi Picoult. I don't want to read books that depress the shiit out of me, but if I'm going down that road, I find Kristin Hannah's books more appealing.
The Mermaid Chair is on my list of "books I didn't finish".
I just finished reading "Love and Other Natural Disasters" by Holly Shumus, which was okay. I get depressed reading about affairs and how families try to survive those things.
I'm currently reading The Paris Wife by Paula McClain (Thanks to Kathryn!). I like it so far, but I haven't gotten very far. I left the book at work yesterday.
Up next is Moonlight Cove by Sherryl Woods. She has written several books and this is book is one of the Chesapeake Shores Series. I'm liking the romantic novels these days. Light and easy to read.
I just finished reading Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I read about it in Entertainment Weekly and it sounded interesting. I really liked the book, it was a fast read.
I have Sisterhood Everlasting on my Nook. I cant wait to start that one! I really enjoyed the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. Looking forward to seeing where all the characters are now. I also heard there were spoilers in the newspapers about the book so I have also refrained from reading anything about the book.
Best book I read lately - Game of Thrones. loved it!
Currently reading: The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde, kind of a satirical twist on the three bears, and Clash of Kings (second in the Song of Ice and Fire series.)
Next up: A Tiger in the Kitchen by Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan and American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld
FIA - I have The Red Queen on my nook but I was not a fan of the White Queen (I enjoyed it I guess, just didn't love it?) so not sure if I'm in the mood for more PG. But I think Margaret Beaufort is one of the most fascinating women of that time period.
I've heard so many good things about both the books and the TV series that I'm curious!
I enjoyed The White Queen but I enjoyed all of the Tudor books far more. I know little-to-nothing about that period of history, so I'm interested to read and learn something while (hopefully) being entertained. It's next in the pile after Sisterhood Everlasting, which I expect to enjoy enough that I'll tear through it pretty quickly.
I just finished On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah. I enjoyed it but not as much as some of her other books (Firefly Lane, Winter Garden, True Colors).
I just started the first book in The Hunger Games series. I'm only about a chapter in, it's ok so far.
I'm also semi-reading/skimming The Happiest Baby on the Block.
The posts in this thread make me want to finish reading the Sisterhood series.
I just finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I think I'm going to read Midwives next or re-read Middlesex.
yea....when I said they were ok, it meant that I read about 1/3 of the book and then skipped to the end to find out what happened
I think I've become an adrenaline junkie when it comes to reading, I need action and thrills.
I've recently read: Lovely Bones, Slaughter House 5, BossyPants (funny, but like pp said, not something I need to own), Drowing Ruth, Einstein Never Used Flashcards (stopped about halfway through)
Cooper - if you like suspense/thriller, have you ever read anything by John Connolly (not to be confused with Michael Connolly)? He is one of my favorite authors. He has a series and the beginning books are much better than those that have come out recently. I would recommend checking out the first one Every Dead Thing. I find the books to be complex but accessible.
I just finished Water for Elephants...I gotta say, I don't know what all the hype is about. It was well-written and all, but I guess I kept expecting a twist of some sort? I don't know...I was not impressed.
I am currently starting Pride and Prejudice. I have never read it and since it was a free download on my Kindle I thought it should be something I read. I have Jane Eyre waiting for me, too.
I also have the Girl who Kicked... trilogy downloaded on the Kindle for when I am ready.
I want to read Bossypants and The Help soon, too.
Someone's getting a little brother!
Let's see...I've been doing more reading than usual lately. I read the latest Sookie Stackhouse. It was good and I really think the next book is going to have to answer a lot.
I found a new Southern writer that I really like, Susan Rebecca White, who wrote Bound South. It was great! I'm picky about my Southern lit but she tells the story through 3 different women and managed to keep everything coherent.
Read the whole Hunger Games series. Not sure I liked the ending of the series but since she wrote about war it makes sense how she decided to end everything. Very well written; I liked how the world she created had rules and she stuck to them...nothing bothers me more than reading a series where the author can't stick the rules he wrote!
Working on finishing NurtureShock, Bossypants, and Dixieland Delight. I'm probably going to finish Dixieland Delight first; I'm so ready for football season and Clay Travis has done an excellent job of describing football culture in the SEC. It speaks loads that he makes such an impression on me as a fan of my alma mater's rival. It's really gearing me up for this fall...I can't wait to share it with the little boy!!!
It's SO GOOD! both the tv series and now that I am reading the books I like the tv series even more. And they are relatively fast reads (at least so far for me) - I read the first book in a weekend.
I plowed through Cutting for Stone when we were on vacation. It was good- a fast compelling read w/o being too easy, if that makes sense.
I started The House of Blue Mangoes on the car ride home, but haven't gotten that far in it yet.
Thanks for this post. I had no idea there was a followup Sisterhood book.
I just read Inconceivable and Still Alice. Both were great. Up next is Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me.

MrsBecky - I am also reading 'Clash of Kings' in the Song of Ice and Fire Series. I just finished Game of Thrones and The Strange Affair of Springheeled Jack. It took me a long time to get through.
AKBride - I really liked Happiest Baby. It had some good tips that really did help us settle DD, well after we found out that she didn't react well when I ate a lot of cheese or drank soy milk
I'll finish the Song of Ice and Fire Series and I don't know what I will get to next.
Currently: His Dark Matters series by Phillip Pullman. It's the series that The Golden Compass was based on. Never saw the movie, but the books are fantastic!
Next: Handling the Undead by John Lindqvist (dubbed Sweden's Stephen King). Really looking forward to this one. Let the Right One In was a page turner from the get go.
I've been devouring books lately! I recently read The Art of Racing in the Rain. Awesome-I finished it in 2 days (long car trips) I really enjoyed it.
And I just borrowed The Hunger Games---oh my gosh SOO good. I can't wait for the sequel, I'm on the waiting list and it should be in tomorrow or Friday.
I finished Ape House last night. It was just ok, not as good as Water for Elephants.
I'm also on the waiting list for the library ebooks for Inconceivable.
Cutting For Stone - last
Me Talk Pretty One Day - currently
The Reading Promise and The Flying Carpet of Small Miracles - coming soon
I need to remember to add this to my list!
Oh, you'll love the Stieg Larsson trilogy and the Help!
I'm finishing up Wuthering Heights and then was planning on reading Jane Eyre. So I'm curious to see how you like it...
I need to finish my book club book and wanted to re-read the last 3 Harry Potter books before the movie.....
I forgot to bring A Soft Place to Land up to bed with me last night so I picked up Sisterhood Everlasting on my nightstand and spent 2 1/2 hours devouring it. It wasn't what I expected, but I definitely recommend it. It was nice to see where the girls all ended up.
I read this for grad school and loved it! I found it so interesting...
I'm currently reading Lit by Mary Karr; I just finished Sing You Home (Picoult), Rescue (Anita Shreve) and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet (Ford).
Next up are a bunch of random classics: The Great Gatsby, The Sun Also Rises, Ethan Frome and 100 Years of Solitude. Also some "less than" books: Mennonite in a Little Black Dress and Those Who Save Us.
