Quick background: DH grew up in a family that owned a small business, so he didn't take vacations as a kid. His dad just couldn't justify taking time away from work. As an adult, he associates travel primarily with what he has to do for work, and therefore considers it stressful.
I want to convince him that vacations can be relaxing and refreshing, but he seems to think they're a waste of money. We're building a house so we don't want to spend a ton of cash right now, but I am dying for a weekend getaway of some kind this summer. Any suggestions you have on how to make trips affordable and/or how to convince this wonderful guy I'm with to unwind and enjoy some down time are much appreciated!
Re: Affordable vacation suggestions
Have you looked at VRBO.com? Vacation Rentals by Owner. We have found very affordable condos to rent for 3-4 day weekend getaways. We also rented the house we stayed in on our HM through the site. They have listings all over the country for everything you could want - studio condo to 5,000 sq ft houses.
Our weekends are usually low-budget too. We often camp, but sometimes rent a condo if it's priced right. My favorite trips have been where we ride our bicycles, hike, grill some yummy food outside, and relax. I don't like to over-plan the vacation weekend, because then it feels like a business trip and I want to go home and relax.
Good luck and enjoy your vacation!
I love staying in condos - as far as relaxation goes, I find them much more comfortable than hotels. They're more homey, IMHO.
Are there any cute little getaways/ b&bs within an hour or two of where you live? Somewhere where you could park, rent some bikes and go exploring?
