The Help

I got the audio book and I'm listening to it while I do other things and here's what I have to say:

WTF took me so long?

This *** is amazing. AMAZING.

That's all.

Re: The Help

  • Agree!!  I've read the book and I have the audio on my iPod.  Right now I'm listening to Catching Fire, then Mockingjay, and then The Help.  I love when the audio is just as amazing as the book!

  • Yes

One of my fondest Paris memories is reading it in bed in our little Parisian apartment.  Total page turner.

  • I loved that book. The movie comes out in August. Can't wait!

that was my incentive. The women who are the voices of the maids in the audio book have been cast as those roles for the movie. I swoon.

  • Ha. Yeah, haven't we been telling you for months!!! It is really good. I think the movie is coming out soon too but the preview I saw made it seem like such a Hallmark-y movie, and in general I try not to see movies made out of books I love because I am almost always disappointed.

Yeah - but I like to read the book before the movie comes out because I can't do it the other way.

And yes, I know. Hence the "Wtf took me so long?" :-)

It's been long enough since you've read it now that you've forgotten a lot of the details, right? That's the way I always like to see book movies -- with distance between the two. Or you could just have a way better memory than me. Wink

And yes Emmie, glad you took the recommendation. Maybe we'll even get you signed up for Goodreads.com one of these days.

  • I'm reading at the suggestion of a friend. I am on page 170 or so. I still don't get it. Have I not gotten far enough in?
  • I thought it was ok. It was better than I thought it would be (but that's because I read a pretty scathing review at Stuff White People Do). I did give it to my mom, since I thought she'd like it, and she did.

i honestly think i like it so much because i'm listening to it.

I dunno... I've been disappointed with pretty much every movie I've seen based on a book I liked so I've stopped subjecting myself to it. And I really did hate the preview I saw for "The Help." I don't think I'm going to bother with the movie...

For those of you who are talking about listening to the book - it's what I've been doing for the past six months or so with lots of books. I haven't actually been *reading* a whole lot; I just got a subscription to Audible.com and have been listening to tons of stuff and LOVING IT. I think it's because I can multitask while I'm listening - I download the books to an Audible app on my iPhone and listen in the car, at the gym, sometimes while I'm doing housework or walking the dog... It's awesome (but only if the narrator is good).

The Audible.com membership isn't too pricey, or you can always check your local library for audiobooks.

arghhhhh. OK, tell you what - how about we go together to see CJ Cregg play Skeeter's mom :)   At least that way if the movie stinks, I'll at least get to hang out with you.

  • i like it but there some things i didn't like plot wise, which I won't go into because it would be a spoiler. But it was extremely well written.

    Yes  sounds like a plan!

And Steve will be relieved that he doesn't have to go see a chick flick with me :-)

    I appreciate the restraint :-)

when i'm all finished we'll have a real discussion - complete with spoilers.

    I'm about halfway through.
