Cleaning area rugs over hardwood

How do you clean your area rugs?  Do you use a carpet cleaner over them while they're on a hardwood floor?  I've never used a carpet cleaner before and I'd rather not spend the money to send them somewhere as they are relatively cheap rugs!  I also don't want to destroy the rugs.

ETA: Whoops!  I meant destroy the hardwood...if the rugs aren't cleaned soon, they're going in the garbage!

Re: Cleaning area rugs over hardwood

  • Our old area rugs had a rubber backing so I cleaned them all the time (over hardwood floors).  It would only cause a problem near the edges w/water getting on the HW.  I always kept a towel handy and wiped up immediately.  If you're worried about the rugs, the rugs will not be harmed.  It's the HW you need to worry about.  Just make sure that you check to make sure there is no water sitting on the HW or under the rug.
  • My mom took her area rug out on the back patio and used the garden hose and soap on it once. Then she hung it to dry.

  • Are they wool?  Maybe call a professional cleaner if you are worried about ruining them.
