The Cake

OK, so this is the cake.

I like the mask, though I think I might like it better before I added the green, when it was just yellow with gold pearl dust.

I love the way the feathers came out.  The mask & feathers were gum paste, which I also made.  But you can see how hard it was to get the fondant smooth because of how sticky and wet it was, and how bulbous it all got with the cream cheese icing underneath.  I don't mind the cartoony look, though the picture in my head was more elegant.

And with the extra cake & icing, cake pops.

Re: The Cake

  • OH, it's super fun!! I love it! I like the mask with the green, myself. The cake pops look delicioso. Definitely proud of your feathers! They look great!

  • Larissa!!! It looks fantastic! I'm so envious of your cake skills. Those cake pops are adorable too. Great job!

  • Ok, so it's not perfect. It's still awesome! I'm impressed.

This. A valiant effort indeed, and way better than what I would have come up with. Is this your first time using fondant or no? I don't think it looks easy to work with at all. But the most important thing is that it tastes good!

Today's cake was my first two-tier cake & first attempt at topsy turvy, but my 2nd fondant cake.

This is one I did for Secretary's Day, my real first fondant cake.  Much simpler with a square cake in a single tier and sides that go straight down.  Those angled sides really mess with how the fondant needs to be smoothed.

And thanks, guys!  I decided it wasn't a bad early attempt.  I just need practice.

  • Well, the cake was a hit.  People were snapping photos and wouldn't let me cut it at first.  They were either not noticing the flaws or were being generous about it.  Either way, it got demolished by the end.

As did the cake pops.  This is all that was left.

And a shot of the pies just for good measure.  There's about 1/3 of one pie left.

  • Yum! I'm no cake-ist anyway, I will eat all cakes regardless of size, color or shape!

Funny related story: DH and I went to a wedding reception last night (didn't get invited to the wedding, which I thought happened weeks ago but was actually the same day) for one of DH's band members. It's the 2nd or 3rd marriage for both so it was a very small event with a pig roast and pot luck type dinner. They had cup cakes, and then a small cake for the couple to cut. Whoever made it looked like they tried very hard at the fondant, but what was supposed to be a white base and red flowers all turned out a lovely shade of beige and brown. Not sure what happened there, but it was a little off-looking. I had a piece anyway and just didn't eat the fondant. Most people I know make it out of marshmallow so it at least tastes somewhat decent. But like I said: I give every cake a fair chance!

  • Ick, I can't imagine what happened to that fondant either.  But I'm all "yay, cake!' too.  :D

  • Love the feathers they came out great, and I think you're being too hard on yourself for the cake, it looks cute and great 1st effort for the topsy turvy.

    I'm sure it was delicious!!

  • I think it looks great!  Don't be so hard on yourself!

Your piping skills are awesome! I'm so jealous of that.  I can't pipe in any sort of nice way to save my life.

  • Thanks, peeps. I do have high standards for myself, I guess.
