Now you have to tell us how it was.  It can only make for a good story at this point.

  • HA!  Okay here it goes.  My impressions of the parade:

Lot's of smoking.  Once I'd quickly walk past one group of smokers, I'd find another. I've never seen that much smoking in NYC ever.

Lots of skankily dressed people, and some unsavory looking types as well.  Maybe I should point out there more of the fat people were more skankily dressed.  Please, I don't want to see your rolls of fat!  No offense to fat people, but when they dress that way it is even MORE obvious!!!  Get a t-shirt that fits!

LOUD!!!  Aside from two floats where people were dancing to nice music, most of the parade (of what I saw) seemed to be people just walking down the route or standing on a float yelling, screaming, blowing whistles, and blowing horns.  Not really much to see.

Anyway I could not take more than 10 minutes of it.  We left and walked east.  Once we passed Lexington (okay these people had completely taken over the streets!), it had gotten MUCH quieter, people were fully dressed, thin, not smoking, and quiet!

Then we went to get ice cream and looked at some flower stands.  When we returned home, the parade-goers had shifted to our street and were yelling, screaming, blowing horns, and smoking (which was coming into our apartment so we had to close the windows, usually we don't have this problem), all of which was annoying us when we were IN our apartment.  This time next year we are going to be out of town.

  • I sympathise with you for them being on your street after the parade. Otherwise everything sounds par for the course for a parade.

Ok, so you should definitely avoid the West Indian Day Parade where whether skinny or fat, you can dress as skimpily as you wish. You will experience lots of smoke (more like bbq smoke though, not cigarette as such) and yes, we like our music loud!  At least ours is in Brooklyn, so you should be safe.

  • I would never go anymore (I went every year as a kid it was alot different), not because I have anything in particular against the PR parade (hell, I AM Puerto Rican) but I tend to feel like parades bring out the worst behavior in people...

Whether its the PR Parade, the Irish parade (I've been to that one. Hows about the crazy drinking and fist fighting in the street?) or the Pride parade - bare breasts flying, penises and sacks on display (LOL!), adults in pleather outfits ON LEASHES walking around on all fours..yeah, parades arent for me.

    LMAO

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker ...here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart I carry your heart(I carry it in my heart)

OMG!  Actually, the little I saw of the St. Patricks Day parade was really tame.  I haven't seen any others.

As for the Carribbean parade, I have been wanting to go to that for years!  Some friends told me it is different than the Puerto Rican parade, but I will take your advice Lawby!  Maybe it will be on tv?  I love Carribbean music.  I like Puerto Rican music too.  I was not complaining about the volume of the music (Indians like their music loud too!), but all the screaming and the horns.

You've never seen a brawl at the St. Patty's parade? Girl, you havent lived. Pure insanity. lolol

  • I know several people who worked to PR Day Parade on Sunday and they said it was crazy.

I have a general dislike for all the ethnic group parades.  I really do feel like they do bring out the worst behavior regardless of the group as Alisha pointed out.  I also feel badly for people who live in that area because they say that these parades leave their neighborhood a mess and there is often damage to property.  I can never understand why the city grants permits for parades during or after which such stuff happens. What a shame.

  • Yeah the part about destroying property and lingering in the neighborhoods, I can definitely support but carnival in the West Indies is about freeing up and letting loose (not sure about the other parades) so skimpy wear (irregardless of size), loud noise and music is the norm. I would hate it if they cancelled the West Indian Parade.

I wish I had suggestions to improve our parade and perhaps the others but I don't at this time.

  • I used to go to the PR parade all the time - although my little PR grandma thought it was insane!- but it's just gotten nuttier and nuttier. I feel like it's become less and less about celebrating heritage and more and more about how wild can you act and get away with it-

I last went a couple of years ago, and there were almost no floats, not much music or dancing, just lots of people walking and screaming- I wish they would bring back floats-- maybe to celebrate different parts of PR history or different areas of the island at least? SOMETHING to look at-- heck, I'd rather see a giant coqui floating down the street than anything else!
