How to keep clover at bay?

We have clover that is very invasive. I can go out weekly and pull it up and clean out our beds but it just creaps right back in. We have some in the grass but overall the grass keeps it smothered.

I thought about just going with it and letting be a ground cover but it tends to cover up our smaller plants. I think in a few years once the newer plants are larger that could work but for now I am afraid it will smother it out.

So what do you do to keep invasive plants out of your beds?

Re: How to keep clover at bay?

  • I've heard that you can sprinkle it with sugar and then soak it with the hose, but I don't know how well that works to keep it gone. I've been going around pulling mine out, because my yard is covered in it, but it's getting old, so I might try this trick and see if it works.
  • I hear that clover like acidic soil.

I don't know what works on them, because I have the same problem.

  • I tend to mulch all bare ground around plants in my yard. I refresh it once a year, at least, as it decomposes over time. This reduces the amount of clover that grows and makes it easier to separate and pull the clover that does manage to break through the mulch layer.
