gyms

I'm thinking about joining a gym, but there are about 5 different chains in a 5 mile radius around home and work and I can't decide which one would work best for me!

What gym do you belong to (chain name and location if you're comfortable sharing that)? What do you like about it? What do you dislike?

Re: gyms

  • Fit For Her, nw side.

It's all women, very clean, upscale, classes are offered, and just about every piece of equipment, cardio or weight-wise, is available.

It's also no-contract, and guest passes are easily obtained. ETA: It is 24-hours with a key. Mine is attached to my keyring. All cardio machines have tv's with basic cable (through E! network on OKC Cox).

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I currently go to All American Fitness in Moore. They have several locations though. We got a great deal to sign up there. Pros: cheaper and closer than we were paying to go to Aspen (now Gold's Gym) and the kids zone is staffed with childcare workers. I've never really had to wait to use anything and haven't had any problems overall. Cons: it's warmer than I'd like inside. There's not a pool. It's not 24 hrs on weekends.

I also often go on base (though that's not an option for all of course). Pros: parents room is always accesible. There are big fans right in front of the treadmills on the mezz so it's not too hot. Their treadmills are the best I've ever seen. Cons: limited hours and you watch your own kiddo in the parent room so you can only do cardio and not weights (including stops for whining/potty breaks/etc). Also, there is often a wait for treadmills.

I used to go to Aspen (Gold's) I'm Edmond and I was disappointed in how much/how often things were broken. It is 24 hrs all the time though and has a pool.

  • Until about February I was a member of The Rock 24 hour gym in Norman (I was a member at The Rock in another town before I moved here).  I was a member there for ~3 years and I loved it---plenty of machines, weights, treadmills, and ellipticals (<---my favorite), open 24 hours, and only $30/month.  Tanning is included with your membership if you're into that.
I also liked that it was never busy, and I've been at all different times--early morning, afternoon, evenings after work, and later at night.  I guess being open 24 hrs made it easier for people to be "spread out" and not be working out at the same time....honestly, I probably wouldn't have lasted 3 years there since I'd get intimidated working out in front of people if it was always crowded.

The only complaint really is that it's not the nicest gym, but it's not disgusting or anything--just well used Smile.  And for $30/month I was willing to work out in not-new facilities.  There's not a pool either, that would be a nice feature to have.
  • I have been a member of Aspen next to Penn Square Mall since March. I was driving by one day, and saw a sign for $20/mo, no enrollment fee, no contract, so I jumped on that. As of a few weeks ago, they were still running that deal. (The person who signed me up told me anyone I referred could get the same deal, so maybe just tell them I sent you? Who knows if they'd still honor that.)

Anyway, there are things I love about Aspen and things I don't love. Things I love: ? great classes (I've gone to yoga, cycling and "intervals intensity" and enjoyed them all); ? up-to-date, clean equipment; ? decent hours (5am-11pm M-Th, 5-9 F, 7-8 Sa-Su); ? knowledgeable staff. Things I don't love: ? there appear to be a lot of people who go there just to be seen; ? when I first joined, they were very pushy about signing up for a personal trainer (they eventually relented); ? since it's connected to the mall, parking can be a pain.

IMO, the classes and price really make it worth it. I can send you more info if you'd like!

  • We go to Shape Fitness in Moore (but they have other locations also). We mainly chose it because it's pretty much across the street from us. But other pros: open 24/7, only about $30/month including tanning, not too crowded (except right after work), not one of those ritzy, preppy gyms or one of those body builder type gyms. The only con I can think of is the classes. They have classes (I haven't tried them yet) but you have to pay extra each month if you want to take the classes.

This is where I workout too. It's hard to beat $19/month with no enrollment and no contract. I also like that I can workout at other Aspen locations (which is included with my basic membership). I agree with Speedy that there are a lot of people there just to be seen. It seems like a lot of them just want to show off their boob job or steroid induced muscles. And, parking is a PITA most of the time because it's at the mall.
