does anyone hate this question as much as i do? it just seems like a trick question at that first stage of the application process.
usually when it is required on job applications/cover letters, i've said that my salary requirements are negotiable and if necessary, that my most recent salary was $_______. that seems to have been effective for me over the years.
anyway, i am applying for a job that would be a great upward move in a field that i have more than 10 years of experience in. however, their application just has a required pull down menu for salary requirements. and, of course, no option to say "negotiable". since this would be a big jump in title/responsibility, i would want a significant salary increase and i have a rough idea of the salary range for similar roles are, but i still don't know what kind of # to list.
so, what would the 9-5 nesties do?

Re: salary requirements question
Yes, I hate that question. I just try to get as much information from possible from people who work in the field, and try to use the number that other employees with my qualifications made when they began a similar job. I also give a fairly large range.
the other kicker of the pull down menu is the ranges are only $5K so you can't even be broad. grrr!!!!
I also hate this question. I am currently willing to take a pay cut because I am trying to get a job in the state I live in, as I currently do not. This would even some of that out.
I also give a range for the salary. I state it is negotiable and for me, it is depending on what else they offer.
I hate it also.
Maybe you'd be pricing yourself clear out of the competition; who knows what the salary offered is? it could be anything -- maybe they want the "lowest balls" to be considered.
I wish companies would flat out state how much the job is paying. This way, you take it or leave it. Nobody's time is wasted.
Could you play the same game with them? Call, not disclose who you are and ask for more information on the job including their salary range? Most positions have a range established before they are authorized to be posted and maybe they would tell you. I have done this once or twice, but to be honest, I have only done it when it was for someone else?s job hunt. I did however work in recruitment and had people call and ask me this question ? guess what, the job description said competitive, but I usually had the salary ranges posted on my wall.
Otherwise, put a salary range you think is fair and include in your cover letter you are flexible on your range depending on the total compensation the position offers.
