Has anyone gone to Sweden?

Hello.

My mom is going to Sweden for five weeks with my brother, SIL (she is from there and her family lives there,) and my nephew. My mom is starting to get nervous as she has only traveled out of the country 1x and that was many years ago with my dad to the Bahamas.  What is the best way for her to get money?  I was thinking to use her CC at the ATM.  Sweden does not use the Euros.  She knows it will be daylight almost all the time and that it will be cold. They will be staying with SIL's parents and then sister so they will have help and ways around.   Any other suggestions I could pass on to her?  They leave next week.

  • I don't know much about Sweden itself, but I can tell you from DH traveling overseas that Traveler's Checks are always a good idea (credit cards getting lost overseas can be a whole big mess...I'd take it only for emergencies!) and in most airports, they offer currency exchanges. DH always brings $200 in cash and exchanges it so he's got currency on him. Hope that helps you!

  • I usually just use my debit card/visa check card to get money out of an ATM. Some credit cards charge a transaction fee when using it outside of the US (usually 3%).  I've never had a problem with a credit card, and used one that doesn't charge this extra rate.  Be sure to tell her to let her bank & credit card company know she is traveling (so they don't think it's unusual activity and put a hold on her cards).    I would second the traveler's checks-  you can get a credit card type of one from AAA, and can replenish it over the phone if you need to.
  • Thanks for the info.  She has let her CCs know she is traveling outside of the country.  Someone who has traveled to Europe often said he doesn't get traveler's checks anymore b.c. it is so hard to find a place to exchange them so she wasn't going to do that.  I will pass your info on to her though.  I have only been to Europe once and it was over ten years ago so things have really changed.  Thanks.
  • AAA has a credit card like traveler's check.  Sort of like a pre-paid credit card. I used it as back up on my last trip to Europe (2 years ago).
